Ku Klux Klan Recruiting in Oak Forest?

An Oak Forest woman found literature from the Ku Klux Klan on her windshield, left while she was shopping at Jewel at 159th and Central Avenue.

An Oak Forest woman found a flier from the Ku Klux Klan on her windshield, as it was parked at Jewel at 159th and Central Avenue in Oak Forest.

"Help Save Our Race," proclaims the flier left on her car. "Everything we cherish is under assault..."

This isn't the group's first appearance in the south suburbs. Ku Klux Klan representatives recently reported "great success" at a similar recruiting effort in New Lenox. Besides admonishing readers to save their race by joining the Klan, the flier, which was apparently produced by the "Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan," included a telephone number with a North Carolina area code.

"All I can tell you is we're recruiting and we're having great success," said William J. Spears, the "Imperial Kaltrop" of the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in the "Realm of South Carolina," of the group's efforts in New Lenox.

The woman contacted Oak Forest police, who told her they cannot do anything, "because it's freedom of speech." In addition to literature distribution, Spears said the Klan patrols the streets looking for crime, of the group's presence in the south suburbs.

"If we see any illegal activity we report it to the police," he said, discouraging the notion that the Klan would try to take the law into its own hands or act as vigilantes.

"They have nothing to be afraid of," Spears previously said of the people of New Lenox. "I think they should feel very safe the Klan is conducting neighborhood watches."

A recording at the number encourages callers who want to join the Ku Klux Klan to leave their contact information and closes with, "Always remember, if it ain't white, it ain't right. White power."

Editor's Note: The reader who provided the flier whited out the phone number prior to providing to Patch.
