Car Break-in Spree Ends in Charges

Two men and a juvenile are accused of burglarizing cars in Oak Forest. As many as 20 cars a night were hit, police said.

Police have arrested two men from Oak Forest they say were involved in a string of car burglaries.

Anthony Santiago, 19, of the 16100 block of Debra Lane, and Christopher Adams, 17, of the 15300 block of Orogrande Street, were charged with one count of burglary each, Oak Forest police said. No bail was set for Santiago. A judge set Adams' bail at $25,000.

Santiago and Adams were arrested on July 30 as the result of an investigation into a series of burglaries involving unlock cars, police said. A 16-year-old offender also was charged in connection with the break-ins.

More charges are pending against all three suspects, police said.

The burglars targeted spare change and small electronic devices and hit 15-20 cars were hit a night, police said. In many cases, the same vehicles were targeted more than once. Most of the items taken have not been recovered.

In written statement, the Oak Forest Police Department released information about the city's theft and burglary prevention program, called "Lock It or Lose It!" The department has set a goal to reduce these types of crimes by 20 percent through the rest of the year.
