Oak Forest Cop Honored for Saving 2-year-old Girl

Officer Michael Lynch was quick to act when he responded to a girl not breathing. His actions saved her life, and Lynch was recently honored with an award for his heroism.

One little girl was able to enjoy Thanksgiving with her family—and many more holidays to come—thanks to the quick thinking and fast action of one Oak Forest police officer.

Officer Michael Lynch was recently lauded for his part in saving the life of a local 2-year-old girl who wasn't breathing. Lynch was recognized during a Nov. 26 council meeting.

“Due to his quick response and training, Mike was able to save the little girl’s life,” said Oak Forest Police Chief Greg Anderson. “His actions are a credit to his professionalism and dedication to this department and community.”

While on duty on Nov. 8, Officer Lynch and his partner, Officer David Devries, responded to an ambulance call for a baby not breathing. Upon their arrival, the officers found the child lying on the floor in distress—possibly as a result of a seizure. Noticing that the young girl was having trouble breathing, Officer Lynch began CPR, first clearing her airway of vomit and then giving thrusts on her back to dislodge something blocking her airway. After several thrusts to her back, Officer Lynch cleared her airway so she could breathe again, according to a release.

"...it is fitting to say thank you to all of our officers, especially Mike, who go above and beyond to serve and protect our residents,” Anderson added. “In particular, we are grateful that this young girl will be able to celebrate the holiday with her family," said Anderson.
