After a challenge by James Hortsman booted current Ward 6 Alderman Peter Muscarella and challenger Greg Simos off the ballot, the former and remaining candidates react to the change.
Following the removal of two of the four candidates from the April 9 ballot for the Ward 6 Alderman seat, reaction from the remaining and removed candidates was varied. Incumbent Peter Muscarella, one of the two candidates removed, said that being removed from the ballot was definitely a blow, but that it was his own mistake that cost him his spot on the ballot. “I misfiled, I made an error on the application … that is the bottom line,” Muscarella said. “I was wrong by legality, but nothing to be subversive.” Muscarella said the challenge was based on signatures on his petition that were printed, not signed in cursive, which is why the challenge was accepted and he was removed from the ballot. “They criticized printed signatures. Following the challenge of several candidate submission forms by another candidate, 6th Ward Alderman Peter Muscarella and challenger Greg Simos were removed from the April 9 ballot Jan. 7, by the Oak Forest Electoral Board.
Signatures sheets without page numbers and invalid signatures got two candidates for 6th Ward alderman kicked off the ballot Jan. 7. Alderman Peter Muscarella and challenger Greg Simos were removed from the April 9 ballot Jan. 7, following a special meeting of the Oak Forest Electoral Board. Sixth Ward candidate James Hortsman filed challenges to both candidates' paperwork, noting the missing numbers and alleged invalid signatures, in addition to Simos' failure to submit an economic statement to the county—a legal requirement for candidacy. “Based upon those findings that were presented, the electoral boardunfortunately had to take Mr. Muscarella and Mr. Simos off the ballot,” said City Clerk Scott Burkhardt. On April 9, 2012 Oak Forest residents will cast their vote for mayor, city clerk, city treasurer and three aldermanic seats. If residents are wondering how to throw their hat in the ring, Patch has the details.
On April 9, 2013, Oak Forest residents will head to the polls to shape city government, as several important posts are up for election. Early in December, it's not confirmed who will run for which roles, but Patch spoke with Oak Forest City Clerk Scott Berkhardt about what residents interested in running have to do to get their name placed on the ballot. Positions up for election include: Each position is a four-year term. Aldermen Rich Simon (Ward 2) and Chuck Toland (Ward 4) will seek another term, along with Mayor Hank Kuspa and City Clerk Scott Burkhardt.
