Kerkstra Students Honor Veterans for Their Service

Kerkstra Elementary students took time out of their days on Friday, Nov. 9, to honor their family members who are veterans.

Americans took time out to honor veterans on Nov. 11, and some Oak Forest youngsters set aside time to honor those veterans that were closest to home—family members.  During a 45-minute school-wide assembly on Nov. 9, students took to the stage in the school's gym for an emotional event that featured songs, speeches and more than a few tears. “This is really emotional, it always is,” said Kerkstra principal Dr. Lori Leppert. “This is our thank you to our soldiers.” Students from the school hit the stage after Leppert addressed the vets and thanked them for their service. On stage, students sang renditions of, “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “You're a Grand Ol' Flag,” before stepping away from the stage to hand out flowers and hugs to their …

WWII Veteran Honored in Hospice Ceremony

Longtime Oak Forest resident and WWII veteran Don DeVos received a hero's welcome into hospice care Sunday, Nov. 13.

It was only in the last few years that Donna Rinker heard the story about how her father stopped the abuse of a Japanese prisoner of war. Don DeVos, now 87, served in the South Pacific with the Navy during WWII. When other members of the military were beating a captured Japanese soldier, DeVos stepped in and stopped the abuse. "It really just, to me, proved the type of person he was," Rinker said. "That really proves he's always had the integrity, the deep feelings for anybody, no matter who you are, whether it's wartime or peacetime. "He's just always been a wonderful role model for us as we've grown up." DeVos was honored for his service Sunday with a special ceremony, pin and certificate. As DeVos entered Joliet Area Community Hospice …

11-14-2011 I was nine years old when my aunt Lois married Don. He became not only my uncle but as I grew he became a good friend of mine. Like he is to many others that know him. I know him to be always faithful and honest. He always gave good fatherly advice. Don employed me when I needed a job in my teenage years. There is no one better than he. I love this man. I am and always will be Your …   more ›

Oak Forest Honors Its Veterans

With a short, simple, poignant ceremony, the City of Oak Forest's Veterans Commission paid homage to those who have fought for our country.

It was short and sweet, but powerful. The Oak Forest's Veterans Commission held a brief ceremony to honor local veterans at the city's Veterans Memorial Saturday, Nov. 12. Commission Chair Craig Miller led the program, which included a 21-gun salute, a prayer for veterans, a moment of silence and a role call of local servicemen killed in action. Meanwhile, on Patch, we've been collecting your photos of the veterans in your life. And early last week, over at Hille Middle School, students had the honor of meeting Allen Lynch, winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Throughout our first year of existence, OF Patch has covered several homecoming celebrations, including Sgt. Jeffrey Kurek, Sgt. Merrill Healy, and Specialist Michael Kalis. …

Lauren Traut: You did a magnificent job with the photos and the video of the poignant ceremony. Thank you for capturing the spirit. I agree with the commentor above: Allen, about attendance. Oak Forest has so many well-thought out and executed events and the resident attendance is shameful. We have a fantastic community supported by a deeply-involved Mayor Kuspa and alderpersons. We should take …   more ›

Important Facts About Veterans Day Part I

From the number of total veterans, to a brief history of the holiday itself, the U.S Census Bureau provides a data-driven look at Veterans Day.

With Veterans Day approaching, the U.S. Census Bureau compiled a slew of facts and information about the holiday, beginning with how the day was established. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. The day honors military veterans with parades and speeches across the nation. A national ceremony takes place at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
