Last year, Oak Forest Raiders mom and Frankfort Resident, Pam Erickson raised more than 4,000 food items for charity by running 50 miles. This year, she's at it again, only farther and in colder weather, with a hope to top her previous showing.
Last year, Frankfort resident and Oak Forest Raiders mom, Pam Erickson let her competitive nature get the best of her, in a good way. While running a 50-mile trail race in Michigan, Erickson struck up a conversation with a fellow runner who told Erickson he raised 3,000 food items from supporters prior to the race. The notion piqued Erickson's interest; she decided then and there she would collect 3,001 food items and then run 50 miles with her donor’s names scrawled on her shirt. She not only ran the 50 miles, but she also blew her goal out of the water, collecting 4,157 food items. Now, Erickson wants to do it again—only bigger, better, longer and colder. This year, Erickson said she plans on running 51 miles and hopes to raise more food…

How much food can one ambitious mom collect in exchange for running 50 miles? Try 4,157 items, along with $602. "All the donations have been brought to Together We Cope and I am officially closing my garage to all food!" Erickson told Patch via email. Earlier this fall, the Oak Forest Raiders mom and Frankfort Square resident stepped up and decided to step out in support of Together We Cope. She vowed to run 50 miles in an effort to raise food for needy families in the south suburbs. The avid runner was looking for another 50-mile run, but registration costs for an official race would add up and she would rather give that money to Together We Cope, she said—along with those 3,001 non-perishable food items. On Saturday, Oct. 22, Erickson …

He had collected 3,000 items. "I thought, 'I want to raise 3,001.' Just one more than him," she said, laughing. Well, she surpassed her goal, …

The food supply at our local shelter is in dire straits, volunteers say.
Carol Ettema scanned the storage area of the Together We Cope Food Pantry last week and immediately felt uneasy. "I've never seen our food supply so low in all the years I've been here," said Ettema, director of food pantry services for the nonprofit organization. “It’s a combination of greater demand for our services and the current higher cost of food." Together We Cope's mission is to bridge the gap for Southland residents in temporary crisis by providing food, shelter, clothing and help returning to self-sufficiency, according to its website. The organization guides families in more than 20 communities throughout Bremen, Palos, Orland and Worth townships. PLEASE VISIT the Together We Cope listing in the Patch Places directory for more …
