ATI Physical Therapy offers tips to stay healthy while cooking that big meal
Next week, it's time to cook the turkey and all the fixins that go with a Thanksgiving feast. All that cooking is hard work. Chefs, even those working in a home kitchen, need to take steps to make sure that all that cooking does not take its toll on his or her body. ATI Physical Therapy have some tips that can help keep you pain-free. “Activities such as standing too long while cooking, meal preparation, and lifting heavy objects like turkeys and boxes can cause back, shoulder and neck pain,” says Tara Smith, physical therapist at ATI. “There are simple things that can be done to help decrease the effects of the added stress on our bodies.” In addition to muscle aches and pains, injuries to the hand are all too common during the holidays. …

In fact, each year more than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day. To help prevent home fires this Thanksgiving, the Red Cross suggests the following tips: Even with the best preparation and precautions, accidents can happen. Thanksgiving is high time for cooking related burns. Minor burns can be treated easily if you remember to save the butter for the rolls and not a burn. My Mom's ice cream cake. You name the occasion in the Traut/Hosty family, and the resounding "tradition" will be that chocolate-whipped-cream-frosting-covered, two layer chocolate cake with a slab of vanilla ice cream sandwiched in between. Topped with strawberries. Thanksgiving is no exception—that cake has to make an appearance. Cousins even joke about wanting that cake as their wedding cake. I'm not kidding. We also try to remember to slow down after a holiday meal, and sip on some Bailey's and coffee—my late Grandpa Hosty's own favorite.
