A man who admitted to carjacking an Orland Park restaurant employee last summer with a BB gun was sentenced to 12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections Thursday, but the woman he said helped him plan the crime is moving forward with a trial. Jonathan Sarolas, 25, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, a class X felony. However, the woman he named as his accomplice has requested a bench trial. April Schmidt, 24, is moving forward with a bench trial, her lawyer announced Thursday. She had been offered a plea deal by the state but turned it down, her attorney said. A 19-year-old Palos man accused of giving heroin to a teen girl was sentenced to two years in the state prison for violating his probation on an earlier theft conviction. Matthew Lefebvre's most recent arrests in connection to an Oct. 26, 2012 incident, where police were called at 11:30 p.m. to a home in the 11000 block of Helena Drive to help with an ambulance call for a teen who had overdosed, violated his probation, authorities said. The teen was hospitalized but didn't die from the overdose. The girl reportedly overdosed a second time in November and Lefebvre was arrested again. Lefebvre is expected to plead guilty to the misdemeanor child endangerment charges for the overdose incidents, but court records didn't reflect any plea …

A new lawyer has joined the case of a former Oak Lawn Community High School student charged with helping to kill the mother and father of a friend. Chicago attorney Mohammad Ramadan entered his appearance but still has to get "up to speed" with the case against 18-year-old Mohammad Salahat, said Joel Brodsky, a lawyer already representing the teen. Salahat and three other young men—John Granat, 18, of Palos Township, Christopher Wyma, 18, of Bridgeview, and Ehab Qasem, 21, of Hickory Hills—all face murder charges for allegedly beating and stabbing Granat's parents to death in their bedroom. One of two people accused of endangering the life of a 15-year-old girl who overdosed on heroin reportedly supplied by the pair has pleaded guilty. Nicolette Martinu, 20, pleaded to one misdemeanor count of endangering the life of a child. She was sentenced to 10 days in the Cook County Sheriff's SWAP, a manual labor program for nonviolent misdemeanors and traffic offenders, and receive six months of court supervision. One of four men accused of robbing an Orland Park jewelry store more than a year ago pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 16 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to court records. Darrin Carter, 35, pleaded guilty to one count of armed robbery. As part of the deal, 16 additional felony counts, including aggravated kidnapping, unlawful restraint and robbery, were dismissed. In addition to the 16-year stint, Carter is set to spend three years on parole upon his release and pay $394 in court costs. He has been in custody on $500,000 bond since he was arrested days after the robbery and will receive credit for 441 days he spent in county jail. Against the advice of their attorneys who believed they could win at trial, five Indiana men charged in the Ashford House attack pleaded guilty to three counts of armed violence. Judge Carmen K. Aguilar handed down the sentences in the attack, where the men stormed the Tinley Park restaurant wearing masks, hoods and gloves with axes and metal batons to confront a neo-Nazi group meeting on May 19 of last year. Charges of mob action, aggravated battery and criminal damage to property were dropped as part of the agreement. Retired White Sox catcher Carlton Fisk pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI in Will County Court in Joliet. Arrested on Oct. 22 by New Lenox police and charged with DUI, the Sun-Times Media said 64-year-old Fisk pleaded guilt to one year of court supervision. He will also pay $1,250 in court costs. Fisk was also ordered to complete an alcohol abuse program. According to the Sun-Times Media, part of that program demands that he meet with select families who had lost loved ones due to drunken drivers. Fisk had been booked on charges of DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol and failure to drive on the right side of the roadway. More than three years after the death of 18-year-old Felix Jimenez, family and friends still wait for the trial of Derek Grib, the man accused of killing 18-year-old Jimenez in July 2009. Judge Frank Zelezinski ruled Dec. 10 that the trial date will be set at a status hearing scheduled for Jan. 3. Prosecutor Rob Holland said in August that he truly believed the trial would take place in October, Jimenez's mother, Teresa Rivera, said months ago. But several status court dates have passed, and the trial is still not scheduled. Homewood police arrested 20-year-old Monica Gonzalez, daughter of Chicago Heights Mayor David Gonzalez, and two other men following reports of loud music and “girls hollering,” according to police. Gonzalez faces charges of battery and possession of drug paraphernalia, after allegedly resisting arrest, kicking an officer on the scene and the discovery of a glass pipe in her purse.
