Daughter Tricked by Scammer Targeting Business: Blotter

Oak Forest police report, May 10.

A 24-year-old New Lenox woman fell victim to a telephone scam, according to a report. The victim received a call from a number with a 630 area code where the caller claimed to be from "Commonwealth Edison." The call was intended for her parents' workplace in Oak Forest and redirected to her cell phone. She told police her parents don’t speak English well and that's the reason she took the call. The scammer said the business’ electricity would be shut off within an hour if a past due payment wasn’t transferred, according to the report. She was told to send the payment through MoneyPak. While transferring the money, the victim realized it was a scam and unsuccessfully tried to stop the $300 transaction. Police called the number and a male …

Scam: Assessor's Office Warns of Impostors

Solicitors are asking taxpayers to hire them to fix property value errors. Here's what you need to know.

Double-check all calls from the Cook County Assessor's Office because the contact may be a scam, a release from the office warns.  People claiming to work at the assessor's office are calling residents, saying they have missing exemptions. The scammers then ask taxpayers to hire them to file Certificates of Error on their behalf.  The certificate changes a property's assessed value for a past year, correcting the tax bill after the assessment is finalized.  Kelley Quinn, communications director for the assessor’s office, said real employees never solicit taxpayers. Nancy, In the incidents that I refer to, the offenders are not Gypsies. Gypsies are of Yugoslavian, Romanian, Russian, Polish and Hungarian descent, often mistakenly described by victims as "Latin/Hispanic” and "foreign-speaking" In these recent incidents, the offenders were of African-American descent.
