What Should Go Here? Barb's Place on 167th

Barb's Place offered lunch and dinner. What would you like to see move in?

Barb's Place, located at 5201 167th St., offered hot dogs, hamburgers, Mexican food and an assortment of other offerings for lunch and dinner. It's a rather unexpected spot for a restaurant; Barb's is near the Gingerwood neighborhood and sits right next to one of the Oak Forest Park District's garden plot areas. The building is currently for sale. Interested parties can call 630-235-3216. Join the conversation. Like Oak Forest Patch on Facebook and sign up for the breaking news alerts! Water Restriction Will Remain Another Week

The dry conditions could lead to small fires, one City of Oak Forest official warns.

The heat and drought-like conditions could lead to small fires if residents aren't careful, City Administrator Troy Ishler said Tuesday. "We'd like to remind residents to be careful. Things are very dry right now," Ishler said. An outdoor watering restriction will remain in effect through next week, Ishler announced Tuesday. Last last month, the City of Oak Forest implemented a measure that limits outdoor water use to from 7 to 11 p.m. for homes on odd or even days, depending on the last number of the street address. If the heat breaks next week, the City will make a decision on whether to return to normal outdoor watering restrictions. "Because of the conditions, the lack of rain, our reserves have been hit pretty well," Ishler said. "…

Drug Treatment and Job Training Facility Looking for Permanence

Affordable Recovery in Blue Island services people from across the area who are looking to kick drugs and alcohol by combining group therapy, strict chore regiments and vocational classes.

Wayne Keys flipped open his cell phone while walking through a hallway in the former Mother of Sorrows Catholic High School building, in an area where tenants made a makeshift movie theater with old coaches and sofas in front of a projection screen.  “Yes, we do offer recovery services, but not for women. It’s men only here,” Keys said into the phone. “But if you can wait just a bit, I’ll get you some numbers for women services, OK?” The 29-year-old former Army Ranger takes five other similar phone calls during an hour-long tour of Affordable Recovery’s Blue Island facility at 13811 S. Western Ave. As the central intake coordinator, Keys will often take over 100 phone calls a day, six days a week. “I remember where I was,” Keys said, when …
