Did Life in the Shadow of President Obama Push Jesse Jackson Jr. Over the Edge?

A columnist who's covered Jackson since his first days in public office suggests Obama's rise sent Jackson to his downfall.

U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.— who came into Congress bearing the heavy weight of his family name and lofty ambitions — counted Chicago's third airport as a signature issue for the better part of his time in office. And there's been no stauncher advocate for that project than Southtown columnist Phil Kadner. Construction of such an airport would bring much-needed jobs to an area plagued by chronic unemployment, and the airport itself, once realized, would serve as an economic engine for decades to come. So went the mantra. Targeted for a rural area outside the 2nd District until the latest congressional remap put the land into his district, Jackson's pursuit of the airport irritated Democrats and Republicans alike, from Chicago to Will …

Wall St. Journal and AP Call Illinois for Obama

About 15 minutes after the polls closed, news media sources put Illinois in the Obama column, giving the president 20 electoral votes.

President Barack Obama won Illinois’ 20 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. Illinois, of course, was never in play. The only visit the president made to his home state late in the campaign came Oct. 25, when he returned to the South Side to cast an early ballot at the Martin Luther King Community Center. Obama is the first president to ever vote early in a presidential election.  The Wall St. Journal and the Associated Press called the state about 15 minutes after the polls closed. The president's handling of the economy is a major factor in many voters' decision this year. "This election bears serious significance for our future," said Sheila Brady of Orland Park, outside her Fernway Elementary School polling …

Well the stock market has lost big in the last week, employers are laying off people in droves, the Middle East is exploding, 4 Americans are dead in Benghazi, our military is in the middle of sex scandals and there's possible coverups by the Obama administration. The only smart voting will be to impeach Obama.   more ›

'What About the Rest of the Sins That Are Not Illegal?' Patch Comments of the Week

The south suburban reaction to the president's endorsement of gay marriage sets off a wide-ranging debate on civil rights and religion.

In response to the South Suburban Patch network's Do You Support Gay Marriage? poll, several Patch commenters opened up a debate. Grunty, from Oak Lawn Patch, writes: "You can't make gay marriage illegal because it's a sin. ... What about the rest of the sins that are currently not illegal? Gluttony is a perfect example. If gay marriage is going to be illegal on the grounds of it being a sin, then it should be illegal to be overweight." Pat, from Homewood-Flossmoor Patch, writes: "I believe in small government. I believe government should stay out of our bedrooms and out of our decisions over our own bodies. I believe that without choice there is no freedom. I believe every person should have the right to choose." Bonnie Bell, from Oak …

Who Will You Blame for Your Smaller Paycheck?

The House and Senate are at odds over extending the payroll tax cut. If the extension doesn't happen, what will come to mind when you get your first check in 2012? Take the Patch Poll.

If your paycheck shrinks on the first payday of 2012, who will you blame? The House, the Senate and the president are at odds over how to extend the payroll tax cut and for how long. A two-month extension bill passed in the Senate and foundered in the House, where representatives say temporary fixes won't fly and a full-year deal must be forged. Barack Obama has called Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House John Boehner to push for a resolution. On top of the possible 2 percentage point rise in the payroll tax, unemployment aid will dry up unless Congress acts. The Southland's congressional reps voted along party lines. Judy Biggert and Adam Kinzinger stuck with John Boehner, while Dan Lipinski, Jesse Jackson Jr. and …

This is still bass ackwards. The tax cut is being taken....er, borrowed....from Social Security. You can trace its origins back to GW Bush. Borrowing from Peter to pay Paul for political reasons. I blame every politician involved in what started as the Obama Administration and has turned instead into a 4-year long campaign for the Presidency, 2012. Yeah, both sides of the fence.   more ›

Poll: Is Leaving Iraq the Right Call?

The president announced that all U.S. troops will be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of 2011.

President Barack Obama announced Friday afternoon that all U.S. troops will be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of this year.  The announcement fulfills a promise that candidate Obama made during the 2008 campaign. The Huffington Post reports there was talk in recent weeks about leaving a small number of troops in the country, but it appears the final decision is to remove all troops.  The White House announced that 4,000 to 5,000 security contractors will remain in Iraq.  Iraq War By the Numbers You can view the breakdown of how your local representative voted on the Iraq Resolution in 2003.  Sen. Dick Durbin tweeted, "I am glad that all our troops in Iraq will be home for the holidays and not going back."  Earlier this month Rep. Adam …

Should Dan Hampton Have Gone to the White House?

Did the Bears Hall of Famer snub the president, or did he make the right call on his own principles? Tell us what you think.

You see Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Dan Hampton a lot in the Southland. At the grand opening of Orland Park Wine & Spirits last year, signing autographs at Binny's Beverage Depot, golfing at Silver Lake Country Club this summer in support of student scholarships at St. Xavier University. Next month, you might catch him in Tinley Park at the CharleyHorse Restaurant drawing the winning raffle ticket for a 63-inch 3D TV in a benefit for the Good Shepherd Center. Maybe you'll see him at one of his daughter's volleyball games at Sandburg High School. But you didn't see him Friday at the White House. Hampton, a key player on the 1985 Bears Super Bowl team, declined President Obama's invitation to honor his hometown team. The president may be a …
