'The Ellen Show' Delights with Southland Surprise

'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' popped into the Best Buy in Orland Park on Thanksgiving, surprising one lucky family from the South Side with a shopping spree and thousands of dollars in Best Buy goodies—and handing out $50,000 in gift cards to others.

They came in hordes and formed a line thousands long—the length of a strip mall, out around the corner, and north along LaGrange Road. Amidst Black Friday excitement and rumors of a cameo by Ellen DeGeneres, eager shoppers and fans flocked to Best Buy in Orland Park on Thanksgiving, hoping to snag a prized purchase, and a glimpse of the talk show host.  Though DeGeneres did not appear and most might have been disappointed, one lucky family's day got a lot brighter.  A South Side family chosen from millions of contest entrants was treated to a Best Buy shopping spree and thousands of dollars in giftcards, courtesy of The Ellen Show. Members of the show's production staff were mum on how they chose the winning family, whose name is being …

Ways to Give Back for the Holidays

Patch has compiled a short list of different charitable efforts around Orland Park, Tinley Park and Oak Forest.

The Marley Project accepts non-perishable food items at various locations around the Oak Forest community. Every item collected will be donated directly to local food pantries. Drop boxes are located at: Monetary donations may also be sent directly to …

We had the pre-cooked shrimp and fresh salmon for dinner last night. It was the best seafood I've gotten from any store and tasted better than most restaurants. Whole Foods has many unusual items. Check out the freshly made prepared salads and foods. Not your typical store deli at all. If you need gluten-free food you will have a lot to choose from in that special section of the store. One Local Charity Reaches Out to Another

A foundation formed in the name of late Orland Park resident Flo Vanderpool recently donated $11,000 to the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation.

Floridamae "Flo" Vanderpool lived in Orland Park most of her life, and spent years seeing the world with her sister Lois by her side. The two visited almost every continent, and each brought back a souvenir from their explorations—often the same souvenir. When Vanderpool passed away in 2008, she left every trinket, her entire estate and her personal fortune in the hands of her investment advisor and good family friend Gary Bertacchi. She asked that Bertacchi keep her charity foundation, the Cord-Vanderpool Foundation, up and running, sharing her wealth with those in need. On Dec. 19, Bertacchi dropped off a $6,000 check made out to the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation, an Orland Park-based charity that delivers toys into the …

Marcus Theaters Celebrates BENcentennial to Honor Founder

Marcus Theater in Orland Park celebrates founder's birthday with dollar drinks, dollar candy and two-fer tickets.

Ben Marcus, founder of Marcus Theaters, was known for his generosity, so the story goes, and would often pick families in line at his theater’s ticket booth and treat them to a free movie. In honor of what would have been Ben Marcus’ 100th birthday, Marcus Theaters, with nearly 700 screens throughout the Midwest including here in Orland Park, is celebrating BENcentennial on Wednesday. The theater is offering concession specials including $1 fountain drinks (yes, that's right), $1 Cinnamon Bun Bites and a BOGO admission voucher good for use in September. “When it came time to plan this celebration, we thought to ourselves, ‘What would Ben do?’" said Marcus spokesman Carlo Petrick. "We remember Ben Marcus as a generous man, and knew he would…
