Daughter Tricked by Scammer Targeting Business: Blotter

Oak Forest police report, May 10.

A 24-year-old New Lenox woman fell victim to a telephone scam, according to a report. The victim received a call from a number with a 630 area code where the caller claimed to be from "Commonwealth Edison." The call was intended for her parents' workplace in Oak Forest and redirected to her cell phone. She told police her parents don’t speak English well and that's the reason she took the call. The scammer said the business’ electricity would be shut off within an hour if a past due payment wasn’t transferred, according to the report. She was told to send the payment through MoneyPak. While transferring the money, the victim realized it was a scam and unsuccessfully tried to stop the $300 transaction. Police called the number and a male …

The Oak Forest Commons is a prime location, where businesses could thrive. But, there are several open spots, waiting for businesses to step in to the space. Today, Patch looks at one of those spaces.

The Oak Forest Commons shopping center is anchored by Food 4 Less, along with several other smaller stores and takeout restaurants, but it also has several vacant storefronts. Fleadh 2013 Lineup: Cindy's Pub Offers Up Free Cornbeef, Cheap Beers

Each day leading up to the Fleadh, Patch will feature a business participating in the Fleadh's Pub and Restaurant Open House Saturday, March 9.

Kids Can't Buy Cigs in Oak Forest

Oak Forest Police cited only one of 22 stores in the city for selling cigarettes to minors during a Feb. 20, 'Kids Can't Buy Them Here,' compliance check.

Oak Forest gas stations, liquor stores and convenience stores were put to the test by Oak Forest police Feb. 20, and most passed with flying colors. During the evening hours of Feb. 20, police conducted the second round of their 'Kids Can't Buy Them Here,' campaign. The test included 22 stores in the city, with only one location cited for selling to a minor. The lone business to be cited for selling to minors was 7/11, 4901 W. 167th Street. Fines for selling tobacco to minors can range from $200 to $500, according to a press release from the police department. Stores in compliance included: Jewel Express, Circle K, Osco Drug Store, Eddy’s Liquor & Tobacco, Shell Gas Station—159th St., Convenient Food Mart, 7-11—Central Ave., Foremost …

There must be something wrong with the Oak Forest business climate. Crestwood, Tinley Park, Orland, Palos Hts. seem to have no problem getting "quality" businesses in there communities. People travel down 159th to go shop in Tinley and Orland and pass Oak Forest up.   more ›
