Too much, too soon? Is it too early for schools to make the call for a snow day?
With reports of a possible 7 to 10 inches of the fluffy white stuff headed our way, some schools and agencies are thinking ahead, and have already called a snow day for Tuesday. Brother Rice and Mother McAuley high schools sent word of closure Monday afternoon, and locally, Hille Middle School announced that after-school activities tomorrow are canceled. But is it too soon for the schools to call a Snow Day? After several snow false alarms this season, some folks aren't buying meteorologists' predictions, and think administrators might be getting ahead of themselves. Oak Forest schools in the Arbor Park and Forest Ride Elementary school districts are ready and have staff prepped to discuss the Newtown, Conn. shootings with students, staff, faculty and families.
Following the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., parents across the country wondered how and if they should talk about the events of Sandy Hook Elementary School. Oak Forest school administrators are doing the same and have staff poised to tackle any of the students' concerns, questions or fears. Forest Ridge School District 142 Superintendent Margaret Longo said the district always has counselors and psychiatrists present at district schools, available for students to express what might be weighing on their minds. She added that the district schools have been in constant contact with families throughout the weekend. “Our parents have done a tremendous job handling the situation,” Longo said. “We did send an email out to families over the …

Some Oak Forest parents might find themselves in a pinch this school year. With changes in school bus routes or services, parents are forced to find new ways to get their kids to class. Patch Facebook fans discussed changes in bus services, and a special something came about—parents offered to help each other out. And so was born Mission: Patch Carpool. Patch compiles a list of all the schools serving the Oak Forest community and when they open their doors for the 2012-13 school year.
Summer is slowly starting to slip away and that can only mean one thing: Schools are getting set to welcome back students for the first day of class.
