Gaelic Park hosted a St. Baldrick's day event during the Oak Forest Fleadh on Saturday, March 9. The event raised more than $22,000 for children's cancer research, with more than 65 people shaving their heads during the event.
More than 65 people, along with friends, family and supporters, gathered at Gaelic Park on Saturday, March 9, to take part in a St. Baldrick's Day event in conjunction with the Oak Forest Fleadh. The shavees were called up in groups of three to have their heads buzzed to the scalp in solitary with children who have been diagnosed with cancer. Shavees in attendee raise more than $22,000 for the event, which will be donated to children's cancer research. Among those who sat under the clippers were Oak Forest Police Department dispatcher Amy Henion, a group of Orland School District 135 students calling themselves 'The Band of Baldies,' and one intrepid traveler from Minnesota, Kelsey Scott, who was part of a team made up of friends calling …

The weather might not have been exactly what they expected, but a chilly rain couldn't dampen Fleadh-goers' spirits Saturday, March 9. A cold sprinkle and icy coating had 5K runners a little worried, but 540 of the 600 registered decided to layer on the green, lace up and hit the course anyway. By the time others made their way to Cicero Avenue for the rest of the Fleadh activities, the sprinkle had stopped, and the fun was just getting started. Oak Forest's fourth annual Irish festival included a 5K, a parade and open bike ride, and a pub and restaurant crawl that sent customers flooding nine local establishments.
