Cook County Forest Preserve Police said a man had sustained a gunshot wound to the head Saturday morning, in a car at 170th Street and Central Avenue. He was later pronounced dead. Check back as we update the story.
Updated, 7 p.m. Updated, 6:30 p.m. Oak Forest police found a man with a gunshot wound to the head in a car near 170th Street and Central Avenue Saturday. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead at 2:34 p.m., according to Cook County Forest Preserve District spokesman Dan Parker. As of early Saturday evening, the manner of death was unknown. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office has not released a name, pending family notification. A student who was hit by a car outside Hille Middle School Friday night remained in intensive care Saturday morning after undergoing surgery, according to Principal Courtney Orzel. Officials have not named the student.
A Hille Middle School student is in critical condition after being struck by a car outside the school on 151st Street in Oak Forest Friday night. As of Saturday morning, the student remained in intensive care at a local hospital after undergoing surgery, according to an email Principal Dr. Courtney Orzel sent to Hille families. No further details are available about the child's injuries or condition. "The child is in a great hospital with the very best of care, and he has a long recovery in front of him," Orzel wrote in the email. The student is not able to receive texts or phone calls, but the family welcomes any show of support from classmates to aid in his recovery. Lend your hands and join the city's efforts to make Oak Forest a cleaner, safer and healthier community. Pencil in April 21 as a day to spend outside, getting your hands dirty for a good cause. Join friends and neighbors for Clean Up Day on Saturday, April 21. Volunteers will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Public Works garage at 15722 S. Lorel Avenue to kick off the citywide activity and get their clean-up assignments. Cleanup activities will run from 9 a.m. to noon, and lunch will be provided for all volunteers. This is a chance for residents, scout troops (Forever green), and school or church groups to make a difference in our community or fulfill service hours. Metra Police have released the name and age of a pedestrian killed when he was struck by a Metra train Sunday.
Ryan Angus, 27, was killed Sunday night when he was struck by a Metra train in Oak Forest. Angus was reportedly standing on the tracks and made no attempt to move as the train approached, according to Metra media spokesperson Meg Reilie. The Cook County Medical Examiner declared the death a suicide earlier this week. The Chicago-bound train struck Angus shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday—a minute before it was due to roll into the Oak Forest station. Identification found with Angus listed his hometown as Chicago. Angus' family lives in Orland Park. The incident, which occurred near 161st and Laramie Avenue, halted service on Metra's Rock Island line for almost two hours, with investigators and clean-up crews on the scene past 10 p.m. Read …

Hard work paid off for a group of local, pre-teen Irish dancers, who recently captured a world championship at the All-Ireland Irish Dancing competition in February.
They aren’t yet 10 years old, and eight area girls can already call themselves world champions. The group from Lavin Cassidy School of Irish Dancing recently returned from the All-Ireland Irish Dancing competition in Dublin toting a silver cup and the world title. The win topped off a season packed with success—including a regional championship called the Oireachtas, and a national championship. The group competition—Girls Under 11 Ceili—pitted the local girls against Irish dancers from around the world. While the team has captured their regional title each time they’ve competed together, this win meant more. All temporary lane closures have been canceled from 5 p.m. Thursday until noon Friday to help with snow removal efforts, the release added.
