Should Maps of Local Gun Owners Be Public?

A newspaper's map with names and addresses of handgun permit holders in New York state has sparked controversy. We want to hear your thoughts.

In late December, about two weeks after the Newtown school shootings in Connecticut, Patch received a request from a Kenilworth resident to publish a map of gun owners in Cook and Lake counties.  The reader referred to a map, which included the names and addresses of handgun permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties, N.Y. The Journal News created the map using publically available data and said it was providing a public service by publishing the information. But not everyone agreed.  Facebook user Mike Pandolfo was quoted in the New York Times as saying: “Now everyone knows where the LEGAL GUNS are kept, a valuable piece of information for criminals. The only problem with this is that the guns are home alone because no one can carry them with you when you leave. Atleast for the next 150 days. Oak Forest Schools Ready for Students' Questions on Sandy Hook

Oak Forest schools in the Arbor Park and Forest Ride Elementary school districts are ready and have staff prepped to discuss the Newtown, Conn. shootings with students, staff, faculty and families.

Following the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., parents across the country wondered how and if they should talk about the events of Sandy Hook Elementary School. Oak Forest school administrators are doing the same and have staff poised to tackle any of the students' concerns, questions or fears.  Forest Ridge School District 142 Superintendent Margaret Longo said the district always has counselors and psychiatrists present at district schools,  available for students to express what might be weighing on their minds. She added that the district schools have been in constant contact with families throughout the weekend. “Our parents have done a tremendous job handling the situation,” Longo said. “We did send an email out to families over the …

Now I agree with you there Michael on this. Political viewpoints of instructors should NOT be what is discussed because I disagreed with over 3/4 of my teachers on politics. Things that should be discussed is on a as needed request, not as a mandated type of discussion. Mandated discussions should be safety procedures of what to do when, where, and how which should be objective and not subjective…   more ›

Newtown School Shooting: What Will You Tell Your Kids?

Oak Forest Patch posed the question on its Facebook page: How do you talk to your kids about acts of violence, what happened in Connecticut? Or do you not at all? See how our readers responded and share your own answers.

The lives of an untold number of children, teachers, staff, families and an entire community were forever changed on Friday, Dec. 14, when a gunman walked into Sandy Hook Elementary in Newton, CT. and opened fire. The gunman, who police officials are declining to name after conflicting reports, killed 26 at the school, including 20 children, before turning his gun on himself. In the ensuing hours, President Barack Obama held a press conference and told parents to hug their children a little tighter Friday night and said the nation needs to, “come together,” during the tragedy. He also said to not only think of those who lost their lives, but those who survived the horrific event, especially students at the school. “Our hearts are broken …
