A collection of Marist High School alumni gathered at Gaelic Park on Friday, March 22. Members of classes five years apart, from 1968 through 1998, got together to share drinks, memories, and some classic Marist pride.
Marist alumni from several classes toasted their beloved high school at Gaelic Park in Oak Forest on Friday, March 22. Alumni from the classes of '68, '73, '78, '83, '88, '93, and '98 gathered for celebration and an alumni awards ceremony. The players from rival schools honored the memory of Brother Rice graduate Andrew Weishar who died at age 21
The stands were filled with blue shirts printed with the number 45. It was Andrew Weishar's number, and they played for him. The longtime rivalry between Brother Rice and Marist was forgotten for several minutes as the two schools came together to recognize a young man lost too soon. Andrew Weishar died in October after a three year long battle with colorectal cancer. The Brother Rice graduate was just 21 years old. It’s not often that high school students can make and enjoy eating ice cream sundaes during their lunch hour. Marist High School in Chicago recently raised funds for the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation.

When Marist principal Larry Tucker witnesses the success the athletic program has had in recent seasons, he admits to being a little jealous. Marist’s girls volleyball team reached the state quarterfinals for the first time in November, while the boys and girls basketball teams are currently area-ranked, the boys volleyball team captured the state championship during the 2009-2010 season and the football team finished as state runners-up in 2010. “We didn’t get to go down state when I was in high school,” said Tucker, who was a star basketball player at Marist. “I always envy those kids.” Tucker has been Marist’s principal since 1998.
