Girls Volleyball Sectionals: Oak Forest Bows Out to Illiana; Marian Sweeps Past Queen of Peace

Bengals let leads slip away in both games of Tuesday night's Marian Catholic sectional semifinals. The host Spartans take care of business to advance to Thursday's final.

Oak Forest definitely had its chances during Tuesday night’s Class 3A Marian Catholic Sectional semifinal volleyball match against Illiana Christian. But in the end, the second-seeded Vikings were too much for the third-seeded Bengals, as Illiana earned comeback wins in both games, 25-22, 30-28. Illiana (25-12) will take on host and top-seeded Marian (22-16) for the sectional crown on Thursday at 7 p.m. Marian Catholic swept past Queen of Peace 25-15, 25-15 Tuesday night in the other semifinal match. Oak Forest seemed to be on its way to beating Illiana in game one, as the Bengals used a 6-0 run to take a 21-16 lead. However, the Vikings closed the match on 9-1 run to win 25-22. The Bengals looked to be on the verge of forcing a decisive …

Football: Marist's Complete Game Too Much for Marian

Redhawks are impressive in all aspects of Friday night's game, and the Spartans are left with a homecoming loss.

Play a complete game. That's what the Marist RedHawks have been waiting to do this season, and on Friday night they did just that. Through an on-and-off drizzle at Marian Catholic, the RedHawks scored through the air, on the ground and on specials teams to earn a 52-27 victory over the Spartans, dampening Marian's homecoming festivities. “We talked about playing a complete game, and it's a thing where our special teams, our offense, our defense, everyone did an absolutely tremendous job (tonight),” Marist head coach Pat Dunne said. Though fireworks were planned for after the game, Marist didn't feel like waiting. The Redhawks lit up the night the very first time they touched the ball. Following a Marian 80-yard touchdown drive that …

Football: Marian Learns How Badly Turnovers Can Hurt

Spartans' giveaways were critical during Friday night's 35-19 loss at home to Nazareth, and some defensive deficiencies also will be addressed.

High risk versus high reward. That's how Marian Catholic High School head football coach Dave Mattio characterized his Spartans’ offense after his team's 35-19 loss to Nazareth Academy on Friday night. The Spartans (2-1) laid the ball on the turf six times in the loss, most of those turnovers coming on botched exchanges between quarterback Robert Cifelli and running backs in the Spartans' backfield. “That's just us being careless with the ball—me especially,” Cifelli said. “That's just something we have to work on as a team; that's just little things. Every inch matters and a couple of those inches cost us big.” Marian took control of the ball to open the first half and drove to the Road Runners' 30-yard-line before the first fumble of the…

Football: Marian Catholic Gets Run Down by Nazareth

Nazareth Academy 35, Marian Catholic 19: The Road Runners trample over the Spartans on Senior Parent Appreciation night by rushing for more than 300 yards.

Breaking it Down: Though the rain held off at Marian Catholic High School on Friday night, the Spartans couldn't hold off the running game of the Nazareth Academy Road Runners, as Nazareth rolled to a 35-19 victory. In a battle of two teams designed to pound the rock, it was the Road Runners’ running backs who consistently found the holes. Nazareth Academy rolled up 351 yards on the ground, with tailback Rudy Romagnano tallying 219 yards on 19 carries with three touchdowns. For the Spartans, running back Jeruel Taylor led the way again on the ground, gaining 162 yards on 18 carries. Taylor did not find the end zone in the game. Two of Marian's three touchdowns came on runs by quarterback Robert Cifelli, while wingback Randall Wells had the…

Oak Forest Resident, Marian Catholic Grad Conway Transforms from Lacrosse Newbie to College Athlete

Even with no lacrosse experience under her belt heading into high school, Hannah Conway instantly was attracted to the fast-paced game.

Peer pressure often is seen as having negative effects on high school students. But for Oak Forest resident and Marian Catholic grad Hannah Conway, it led her to a new sport and a college scholarship. Three years ago, lacrosse was non-existent in Conway’s personal sports world. She had participated in most of the mainstream sports in grammar school and was focused on playing volleyball at Marian Catholic. A couple friends asked Conway to play lacrosse--a relatively new sport at the high school–and Conway agreed to try it, figuring it was a good way to stay in shape. “I liked being active, but it was still something I was learning and I picked it up fast,” said Conway, who played on the JV team as a freshman. “I played with a lot of juniors…

Top-ranked Eagles take two from Moline in a rematch between two teams that met in Class 4A state semifinals last spring.

1. Sandburg (2-0): Travel risk, great reward. The Eagles opened with a doubleheader sweep at Moline (9-0 and 10-4) on Saturday. Last week: No. 1. 2. Andrew (0-0): The T-Bolts get started this week with games against Thornton Fractional South and Marist. Then, on March 29, Sandburg plays at Andrew. Sandburg Makes No. 1 Part of its Lex-i-con

Returning all-state catcher Lexi Bryant has Eagles sitting on top of Patch preseason power rankings; Andrew looks for Sister Act to play out as a big hit.

1. Sandburg (40-2 last year): The old adage about the rich getting richer applies here. The Eagles won the Class 4A state championship and return 10 players, including Kansas recruit Lexi Bryant. The senior catcher hit .500 with 15 homers. Laura Olson (Indiana) compiled an 18-0 record with a 1.00 ERA. And senior third baseman Jessica Perkins (Illinois) hit near the .375 mark. Opener: Saturday at Moline. 2. Andrew (32-5): The T-Bolts live in the world of a Sisterhood. Wisconsin recruit Katie Christner returns after hitting .434 with two homers, 12 doubles and 35 RBIs. She is a fixture at shortstop. Sister Kelly Christner covers plenty of ground in the outfield. And defense is her second-best attribute. She hit .559 with three homers, 15 …
