Extra Points: Burst from Burse Leads Bengals

Oak Forest senior transforms from bench player to captain of the team.

As Oak Forest senior basketball player Marcus Burse kept his team in the game during its first-half struggles in a 62-58 loss to Chicago Fenger on Monday night in play at the Class 3A Rich East Regional, his transformation was made complete. Burse scored 11 of Oak Forest's first 19 points and showed off his leadership skills in his final high school basketball game. Anyone who saw where he was at during his freshman year would have been amazed to see how far he has come.   Despite losing in the opening round of the playoffs to the Titans, Burse led the Bengals with a game-high 18 points and a bit of his own drive. “I was the captain of the team,” he said.  “I learned to show by example because nobody else is going to do it if you don’t do …

Boys Basketball: Missed Free Throws Spell End for Oak Forest

Fenger 62, Oak Forest 58. Season-long achilles heal leads to early playoff exit for the Bengals.

The Hot Read: Oak Forest has struggled all season long with free throws and those struggles came back to haunt the Bengals in a 62-58 loss to Chicago Fenger in the Class 3A Rich East Regional on Monday night. Trying many different physical as well as mental approaches never improved the overall results at the line for Oak Forest. Against Fenger, free cost the Bengals their season as they went 15-for-33 from the line. In a game they never led and trailed by double-digits for most of the first three quarters, the Bengals came storming back thanks to the strong play from seniors Marcus Burse and Scott Korosic.  With the game tied at 56 with 1:22 left, the Bengals had the chance to take their first lead, but Kyle Funkhouser missed both of his …

Extra Points: Oak Forest's Williams Makes Senior Night Memorable

Jimmie Williams ensured that his last time playing on his home court was a good experience as the Bengals held off Lemont on Friday night.

For Oak Forest senior guard Jimmie Williams, Friday night's game against Lemont wasn't just another game. It was his one last chance to play on his home court, and he wanted to make it a night he'd never forget.  "I was so pumped for this game," Williams said. "The crowd got me pumped. My team, the coach and my family got me going." Williams led the Bengals with 17 points and grabbed four rebounds in Oak Forest's  63-49 win over Lemont. Bengals head coach Matt Manzke said that even though Williams has stepped up before, he definitely stood out in this matchup. "He (Williams) was just determined on his Senior Night to make it a great experience," Manzke said. "He was all the difference. He was great defensively, and 17 points is huge for us…

Boys Basketball: Oak Forest Makes Most of Senior Night

Patch's MVP: Oak Forest’s Jimmie Williams (17 points, 4 rebounds) nailed two three-pointers in the third quarter, helping the Bengals build a 42-30 lead late in the quarter.  Key Stats: The Indians went 6-of-18  from the free-throw line. Oak Forest Runs Into Trouble at Eisenhower

Bengals unable to figure out the Cardinals' run-and-gun style of play in an 89-65 setback on Friday night.

Sometimes, simulating game-like scenarios in practice just doesn't equal the real thing. Despite having a week to practice for Eisenhower's run-and-gun style of play, Oak Forest (1-7, 1-3) had trouble handling the pressure Friday night in an 89-65 loss to the Cardinals (4-5, 2-2) in a South Suburban Conference matchup. "We worked on it every day," Oak Forest coach Matt Manzke said. "It's tough to prepare for because it's hard to simulate what they do in practice." In the offense, Eisenhower coach Mike Curta said there are five goals: shoot 80 times, with 32 of them being three's, outshoot opponents by 24 total shots, force 26 turnovers, and get an offensive rebound on 35 percent of missed shots. These goals translate to an up-and-down game…

Oak Forest Looks for Leaders, and Burse Steps Forward

The Bengals' 6-foot-4 senior may be a late bloomer, but he's taking advantage of his opportunities on a rebuilding squad.

To say that Oak Forest High School's boys basketball team has had to regroup this season is an understatement. The team bid farewell to graduates Deontai Cole, Matt Funkhouser, Jesse Jarmon and Dale Renshaw at the end of last season. The Bengals relied on those players a great deal in the 2009-2010 campaign, and now they have only senior point guard Scott Korosci as a returning player with valuable experience.  Korosic, an all-conference selection last season, has the ability to pour in points. But he's going to need plenty of help — and that's where a player such as Marcus Burse comes in. "He's a late bloomer in terms of his basketball career," Oak Forest coach Matt Manzke said of Burse, a 6-foot-4 senior forward. "He's just kind of …
