Who Do You Trust with Your Furnace?

Don't want to be left out in the cold if your heating system doesn't work this winter? Recommend your favorite business that fixes furnace.

If you still thought summer was lingering, last night probably killed that line of wishful thinking. Now that temperatures are dropping, homeowners are beginning to remember that the thermostat on the wall isn't just for cooling the house. But what happens when you turn up the heat, and you find out your furnace is on the fritz? No one wants to go long with a bad furnace during cold temperatures. That's why Patch is asking readers to recommend their favorite business that handles furnaces and other household heating and cooling needs. Give a shout-out to that shop by writing a review in our Patch Places business directory. Think of your recommendation as a public service, telling residents the best places to go in Oak Forest. And if you …

What Should Go Here? Former Home of Frozen Custard Shop

When local favorite 2 Sisters Frozen Custard moved to Midlothian, they left a void in locals' stomachs—and the storefront they used to rent. What should go there?

Like long days and warm nights, the orange awning touting 'frozen custard,' next door to Sakebob BBQ, was a summer staple. But the ladies and the treats behind the sliding windows have since moved on—and though the awning still hangs above the window, the store stands empty. Situated alongside the Japanese restaurant along bustling 159th Street, it could be an ideal new home for a small business. But what could quiet the rumblings of custard-hungry Oak Forest folks? Who could follow in the sisters' footsteps? The space is available for rent, and we want to know—what do you think should go there? For more information on the space, contact real estate agent Dave Shalabi, at 708-429-4300.  And don't forget to deposit your two cents here: What…

The only question that is important is LB's. Ken and Dick's too. It does need to be cleaned up, not inviting at all. If Sakebob's is good, then why not cut them a deal to expand. Open up the whole building and it might also help their business. Never been to either place.   more ›

'Best Fleadh Yet,' Pub Owner Says: Do You Agree?

Tom Hinsdale, co-owner of Mrs. O'Brien's Pub, was extremely pleased with this year's Fleadh. Patch is curious if you agree.

The Fleadh crowd at Mrs. O'Brien's Pub, was consistent, respectful, and a mix of old and new patrons—and that makes for a happy bar owner.  Tom Hinsdale, the bar's co-owner, thanked the city council Tuesday night, for what he called "the best Fleadh yet. "It just keeps getting better and better," Hinsdale said. "New folks come in, and then they come back. And then they become regular patrons. And that helps businesses grow." Hinsdale joined 10 other venues on the pub and restaurant open house. Each offered its own set specials, featuring food and drink deals throughout the day and night of the 3rd annual Oak Forest Fleadh. The event is sponsored by the Oak Forest-Crestwood Area Chamber of Commerce.  "When I came here five years ago, and …

What Should Go Here?

When Community Motors shut down, it also shut off a significant source of revenue in Oak Forest. Now the city's trying out a new tax financing district to help attract new businesses. But you tell us—what should go there?

As it stands, the former site of Community Motors is doing Oak Forest more harm than good. The 8-acre plot is losing value each day it stands vacant, and something has to be done, said Community Development Director Adam Dotson. Officials are trying to restore the property to its previously bustling status. Recently, aldermen signed off on a special taxing incentive district to help draw business back to the area near 159th and Terrace Drive. The area encompasses the former dealership, Oak Forest Dental, Bjorklund Group Home and a church. Officials previously batted around the idea of a baseball academy, that had its drawbacks advantages, supporters and critics. But we want to know: What do you think should go here? Leave your suggestions …

Nailing It: Who Is Tops for Your Tips?

Have a favorite business in town? Or one that hasn't made you happy? Please join the discussion on Patch and leave reviews in our business directory.

Each week Patch focuses on a different product or service. This week it's about the hand that soothes yours during a much-needed manicure. Raise your hand if yours are taking a beating this winter. With paper cuts from wrapping paper, or splinters from a shovel, or just the basic wear and tear of cold weather—some of us don't take very good care of our hands during the winter months. The skin tightens and dries, and nails start to look a little ragged—but that's where mittens come in handy. If folks are starting to shun your handshake, stop into one of these local nail salons.
