Inaugural 5K to Help Kids' Burn Camp Exceeds Expectations (Photos)

Around 600 racers participated in the first-ever Run for Your Life Safety 5K Run/Walk in Tinley Park on Sunday. The event earned about $10,000 for I Am Me, a nonprofit camp for young burn victims. Check out some of the images from the day.

The Run for Your Life Safety 5K Run/Walk organizers from the Tinley Park Fire Department and Fire Prevention Bureau had modest goals for the event, which was held Sunday morning at the 80th Avenue Metra station. For one thing, this was the inaugural outing for this benefit race, with proceeds going to I Am Me, the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance’s children's burn camp, which helps kids with significant burn injuries ages 8 to 16 build self-esteem through outdoor activities. PHOTOS: Running 'Boston Strong' in the First Midwest Half Marathon The 5K also was competing with another race Sunday, May 5, the First Midwest Half Marathon in Palos Heights. Given those considerations, a turnout of about 200 runners and walkers would be considered …

5 Reasons Why the Women's Expo in Tinley Park Matters

That's what Patch wanted to know about the weekend event at the Tinley Park Convention Center. Find out what a representative from the expo had to say.

In its second year coming to Tinley Park, the Women's Expo invites attendees to learn more about a variety of business exhibitors, as well as expand their awareness on women's health issues. And it's about having a fun weekend, too. Patch asked Sally Goss, the Women's Expo's media manager, for five reasons why the event is important and matters to women. Here's what she had to say. 1. It's a Day for You: We want women to come to the Women’s Expo for a day that centers exclusively on them. As women, we focus so much on other people and commitments outside ourselves. A day at the Women’s Expo is a day women can have for themselves. 2. A Chance to Try Something New: Women can ask exhibitors questions, see demonstrations and try samples in a …

I certainly hope you follow through with what you wrote, although every scam artist for a benefit I've seen has said pretty much the same thing . It just seems a bit unusual the way its being handled from a legal standpoint. If there's no Trust, is the money part of your daughter's estate? If so, her alleged murderer/husband may have a legal claim to it. What happens if you're involved in a law …   more ›

Hope for a Heart: Arndt Family Turns to the Community for Help

Janet Arndt, of the Gingerwood neighborhood, and her family will hold a fundraiser to help pay for a heart transplant.

Janet Arndt has undergone five open-heart surgeries in the last 37 years. Now, Janet, an Oak Forest resident, needs a new heart. Because of her medical history and the severity of her condition, none of the hospitals in the suburbs, the rest of Illinois or even Indiana will put her on the heart transplant list. It wasn’t until her long-time cardiac doctor contacted a friend at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota that she now had a chance. “It’s possible I could get a heart within a year. But nothing's guaranteed. You know that,” said Janet, who has lived in the Gingerwood neighborhood for 13 years. As if that wasn’t enough, her husband David recently lost his job and the union insurance plan will run out by the end of December. After that, she’ll…
