Martin Rodriguez, 48, allegedly waited until their three children were at school before strangling his wife Erica, slitting his own throat and setting their home on fire Dec. 18. Rodriguez was treated for burns and a cut to his throat. Rodriguez appeared before Judge Colleen Hyland. Rodriguez was preliminarily charged with first-degree murder and aggravated arson. A public memorial service will be held in the near future. The family asks that those wishing to pay their respects wait until the public memorial service. Born Sept. 25, 1972 in Champaign, Erica was also formerly of Mahomet. She was a Registered Nurse for Advocate Hospice, caring for patients in the south Chicago suburbs. Erica's son Andrew described her as "the definition of an angel sent from above." Her daughter Sylvia called Erica her best friend.
