Cook County is offering all residents a $40 credit for having their pet spayed or neutered throughout February—National Spay and Neuter Month. So why should you get your pet fixed? Spayed and neutered pets tend to live three to five years longer than those which aren’t, according to a press release from the county. If that’s not convincing enough, consider the millions of dogs and cats euthanized every year as a result of unwanted pregnancy. “The procedure not only helps your pet live a longer, healthier life, it benefits the community because it reduces the number of strays and unwanted animals in our neighborhoods,” Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said in a press release. “Communities spend millions of tax dollars every year…

Tinley, Orland and the O-Fo are in a three-way battle for food supremacy in the weekly Chowdown Showdown. Here's where they stand.
Each week, Chowdown Showdown takes three local restaurants – one in Tinley Park, one in Orland Park and one in Oak Forest – and pits their dishes against each other to find the best around. This week we're giving our waistlines a rest, recapping the battles thus far and asking you where we should go next. The Battle: In our first battle, we made like Mary and had a little lamb, specifically piled on a pita with tomatoes, onions and tzatziki. We went to Mickey's Ribs of Tinley Park, the similarly named but unrelated Mickey's Gyros of Oak Forest and Orland Park's Kismet Restaurant Winner: In the biggest Greek battle not won by a fake horse, Mickey's of Oak Forest came out on top. Read the review to find out what made them our gyros top pick…

Meet Dino. He's a gentle, yet energetic, American Bulldog and he needs a home.
Dino McGee needs a home. He's a healthy, vibrant one-year-old American Bulldog who likes to play. Dino weighs about 66 pounds, has black fur with white spots on his chest and legs, floppy ears and a long tail. He responds well when called, is good natured and has a ton of energy. Dino could help with that weight loss New Year's resolution that might be nagging you. Just try to keep up with him. Also, check with Tinley Park PAWS about last week's featured pet, Jasper, to see if he found a home yet.

Jasper, a loving and playful 8-year-old Wire Fox Terrier mix is looking for a home. He loves car rides and is house trained. He's recommended as an indoor dog, but has a lot of love to give and fun to share with the right owner. He does have some minor health issues, a Stage 2 heart murmur managable with inexpensive medication. All eight of the beagle puppies featured in the Jan. 18 Adopt Me have been adopted, but PAWS still has many pets looking for a loving home.
