Dog Park Nears Completion

After months of work, the new dog park near 160th and Oak Park Avenue is nearly complete.

Soon residents of Oak Forest, the surrounding area and their furry, four-legged friends are going to have a new place to play.  After months of work by the Cook County Forest Preserve District and the Bark for a Park Committee, opening day of the dog friendly park at Bremen Grove is finally near. Although an official opening date hasn't been finalized, Cook County Forest Preserve spokesperson Karen Vaughan said the park should open in mid-November. Camping in Cook County? Speak Up Now

Cook County Forest Preserve District wants to greatly expand camping. Read the details, and register your views in public hearings today and Thursday. You can also email them.

How would you like to go camping without the long drive to get there?  The Forest Preserve District of Cook County has drafted a plan to greatly expand camping facilities, including renovating and constructing cabins, bunkhouses and a lodge, a new Camp Pine Woods in Northbrook along the Des Plaines River, and more. It would also expand camping to adults and families; currently only organized youth groups, such as Scouts, can use the three overnight camps. Shooting Death Near Forest Preserve Ruled a Suicide

One day after Oak Forest Police found a man with a gunshot wound to the head Saturday, May 12 near 170th Street and Central Avenue, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled it a suicide. The victim was from Tinley.

The death of a man found with a gunshot wound to the head Saturday has been ruled a suicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.  Police found Steven Baggs, 63, of Tinley Park in his car, near a forest preserve around 170th and Central Avenue. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead at 2:34 p.m., said Dan Parker, spokesman for the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. Updated: Man Found Shot in Car Near Forest Preserve

Cook County Forest Preserve Police said a man had sustained a gunshot wound to the head Saturday morning, in a car at 170th Street and Central Avenue. He was later pronounced dead. Check back as we update the story.

Updated, 7 p.m. Updated, 6:30 p.m. Oak Forest police found a man with a gunshot wound to the head in a car near 170th Street and Central Avenue Saturday.  The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead at 2:34 p.m., according to Cook County Forest Preserve District spokesman Dan Parker.  As of early Saturday evening, the manner of death was unknown. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office has not released a name, pending family notification. Updated, 5 p.m.  The car has been towed and police have left the scene. Reserve Your Cook County Forest Preserve Picnic Spot

Beginning Jan. 3, the Cook County Forest Preserve District will begin selling picnic permits for 2012.

The Cook County Forest Preserve District will begin selling 2012 picnic permits online and in person Jan. 3. The district encourages planners to reserve desired dates and locations early. Last year, out of the total 8,122 permits sold, 1,044 were issued on the first day. More than a million people participated in picnics last year, according to the district. Permits can be obtained through its website starting at 8 a.m. on Jan. 3.   Permits also can be purchased at the Cook County General Headquarters, 536 N. Harlem Ave. in River Forest, on Tuesday, Jan. 3, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. After Tuesday, the regular office hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Keep in mind as you plan:
