Oak Forest Police Begin 'Lock it or Lose It' Program

The Oak Forest Police Department will start a 'Lock it or Lose it,' campaign Monday, April 1, reminding residents to properly secure their vehicles and store valuables out of sight in their car.

Following a rash of burglaries of unlocked vehicles in the city, the Oak Forest Police Department is starting a new campaign to help remind residents to "Lock it or Lose it." Kicking off Monday, April 1, and running through the rest of the year, the campaign will see officers patrolling city parking lots and neighborhoods, inspecting cars to make sure residents aren't leaving valuables in plain view and that vehicles are locked. If an officer finds a vehicle that might be enticing to a burglar, he or she will leave a notice under a windshield wiper, reminding the owner to be more careful. “A vehicle with an unlocked door or an open window is an easy target,” said Eric Wynn, a police investigator who serves as the department’s crime …

I really think this is a waste of tax payer dollars. Maybe the chief was tired of seeing them in the parking lot of the rec center, 7-11, Resurrection, and figured if they are going to sit in the lot and chat they may as well check the cars. I live on a cul-de-sac block and the police only come if they are called. I would love for them to come up and down 147th and sunset without us calling. To …   more ›

Oak Forest Hit with Rash of Car Burglaries: Police Blotter

A string of car burglaries occurred during the night of Nov. 5–6. A total of nine cars were robbed on various streets in Oak Forest. Police are investigating.

During the late night and early morning hours of Nov. 5–6, a string of nine reported car burglaries took place on Sycamore Lane, Cypress Lane, Timber Court and Heron Drive. The rash of burglaries all featured either smashed-in windows or unlocked vehicles that the suspect(s) then entered and removed various items.  The victims reportedly told police that items removed from cars included GPS units, portable DVD players, loose change and cash, and tools. Police responded to a home in the 17000 block of Sycamore Lane after a resident reported a burglary to their vehicle. At the residence, police spoke with the victim who told officers that sometime between 10 p.m. Nov. 5 and 7:30 a.m., Nov. 6, an unknown suspect(s) smashed in their driver's …

MONDAY, JUNE 27 The following car burglaries were reported to police. In all cases, the cars were all left unlocked, police said: A resident in the 15000 block of Park Avenue found his car door open shortly after 3:30 a.m. The victim reported nothing stolen. SUNDAY, JUNE 26 A resident of the 6800 block of Ridge Point Drive reported that two of his checks were cashed at a bank without his knowledge, police said. SATURDAY, JUNE 25 A male suspect reportedly used counterfeit bills to pay for a purchase of electronics made through Craigslist.
