Judge: $975,000 Bail for Ashford House 5 is 'Proper'

Despite defense attorneys' insistence that five men police say were among 18 who recently unleashed on a group of local diners are "upstanding citizens" with "longstanding ties to their communities," a judge denied their bail reduction motions Wednesday

Defense attorneys painted a volunteer-oriented, sympathetic picture Wednesday of the five Indiana men accused in May of attacking a group of alleged white supremacists who were sitting down to eat in a Tinley Park family restaurant. Attorney Stuart Smith, who's representing John Tucker, 26, went so far as to say he believed the wrong group was arrested in the case, describing a "verbal argument that escalated," and outside court insisting the Five were acting in self defense. Suspects joining Tucker in front of Associate Judge Carmen K. Aguilar Wednesday were Cody Sutherlin, 23; Dylan Sutherlin, 20; Alex Stuck, 22; and Jason Sutherlin, 33. 5 'Attackers' Appear Before County Judge, 2 'Targets' Charged Separately

Five Indiana men were accused of felony mob action, among other charges, during a Monday afternoon court appearance. Two men who prosecutors say were targeted in the Ashford House attack were charged separately.

Bail was set Monday for five Indiana men who stood as a group in connection with a Saturday afternoon mob-style attack in Tinley Park.  Two among those targeted in the attack, who officials say are associated with white supremacist organizations, were also charged. They appeared before a judge separately. Dylan J. Sutherlin, 20, Cody Lee Edward Sutherlin, 23, and Alex R. Stuck, 22, all of Bloomington, Ind.; joined Jason W. Sutherlin, 33, of Gosport, Ind.; and John S. Tucker, 26, of Spencer, Ind., in front of Cook County Associate Judge Terence B. Smith. A group of about a dozen showed in court to support the suspects. Several of them collectively gasped when the highest bail amount—$250,000 for Jason Sutherlin because of his criminal …

Target of Saturday's Attack Believed to be White Supremacists, Mayor Says

Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki said police are looking at an anti-racism group as the source of the attack.

Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki said police believe those involved in Saturday’s mob attack inside a local restaurant came from a group called Anti-Racist Action. Zabrocki told the Chicago Tribune the police are examining the possible connection with the group and that they also believe the target of the attack was a gathering of white supremacists. The Anti-Racist Action website posted a response Saturday to Patch’s coverage of the mob-style attack at Ashford House that officials say included 15 to 18 black-clad people that targeted a specific group. Eyewitnesses told Patch the attackers were armed with bats and hammers. The website's post credited the attack to a group of “anti-fascists” who directly targeted the gathering. Ashford House …
