Greens at Prestwick Country Club Voted Most-Loved in the Southland

Patch asked for our readers' recommendations on the golf course with the best greens, and after two weeks of voting, Prestwick Country Club came out on top.

Local golfers' favorite courses have mastered the combination of greens speed, undulations, trueness of roll and firmness. You're looking for the course without ball divots, uneven green speeds and the dreaded dead patches. We asked for readers' picks of the best greens in the Southland, and after two weeks of voting, ladies and gentlemen, Patch has a winner. Our Patch readers say Prestwick Country Club has the most-loved greens in the area. The Frankfort country club offers greens one reader called, "manicured to perfection." The greens at Prestwick will make you cry. They are rolled to perfection. They break in ways that seem impossible. They are, by far, the best greens I have played. — Greg M. Prestwick CC has a GREAT course. Big trees…

That's what's wrong with politics and elections. They spend months ripping one another apart and point out why you should not vote for the other person, then once one gets the nom, they are backed and supported and toted like they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. It's a freaking joke.   more ›

Help Us Pick the Golf Course with the Most Intimidating Drives

You aren't able to hit the links as often as you would like, and there are just some courses you know to avoid because those drives? They get you every time. Which courses offer the most intimidating drives?

You're standing on the first tee. You didn't get in quite as many practice shots as you would have liked. Ahead, you see nothing but treelines and bunkers on both sides of the fairway. All you can hope is that the ball flies straight and you don't slice into a bunker or hook into the woods. When it comes to playing a round, golf courses in the Southland range in difficulty from "I got this," to "How in the heck...?" Your favorite courses offer the perfect mix of straight shots and tough doglegs, but Patch wants to know which course's drives leave you holding your breath after the ball leaves the tee? Which course offers the most intimidating drives around? Reviews count for half of the overall score in determining a winner. The reviews and…

Should the Cook County Use a Portion of Oak Forest Hospital as a Cemetery?

A Cook County plan calls for burying the poor and indigent in a 5-acre section of the hospital.

A Cook County commissioner has proposed a plan that would reserve a 5-acre portion of the former Oak Forest Hospital as a county cemetery. Cook County Commissioner John Fritchey (D-Chicago) has put forward a proposed plan that could save the county $180 million and satisfy burial needs for 100 years, Sun-Times Media reports. The burial of indigent and unclaimed bodies would be handled with more dignity under this proposal, Fritchey said. On Tuesday, Sun-Times Media published an editorial endorsing the plan for the section of the hospital property: Eventually the land might have been used for something more profitable, but we can’t think of many uses more necessary. The editorial goes on to state that the county had "stumbled" in its duty …

And the Winners of the Patch Mother's Day Contest Are ...

It was a tough job, but somebody had to do it. Two Patch editors and a representative from Amato Salon and Spa name the top three entries in Patch's 'Mommy Needs a Makeover' contest.

Our Patch readers sure love their moms. We asked you to share what makes mom special, and many of you plucked at heartstrings across the Southland with your entries. After weeks of our 'Mommy Needs a Makeover' contest, the Patch panel of judges was left with the daunting task of choosing a grand prize winner.  After much deliberation and a few "aww's", some sniffles and a bunch of tissues, the judges narrowed it down to the top three.  1st Place, Winner of a salon and spa package valued at $450, (courtesy of Amato Hair Design in Tinley Park): Kerry Nolan, on behalf of Mary Nolan  Here's what Kerry had to say about her mom, Mary.   My mom (Mary Nolan) has been my rock for my entire life – and my sister’s, and my brother’s, and her siblings…

This Week's Pets: Cool, Laid-Back Cats

Stanley and Joanie, the shelter's longest resident, are ready for a new home.

I've got a pair of easy-going cats for you this week. Stanley Stanley is a 3-year-old orange Domestic Short Hair who is as relaxed as a cat can be. He's just happy to lie in a bed all day and is incredibly easy to get along with. The people at Tinley Park PAWS assure me that he's a gem and doesn't mind being picked up. Stanley is a bit shy so you might see him bury his head occasionally. Joanie This 5-year-old black Domestic Short Hair is the longest resident at Tinley Park PAWS. Joanie came to the shelter in January 2011 and made a home among the other cats. But she is definitely ready to find a new home. Just like Stanley, Joanie will be a little shy with new people but will quickly warm up to you. She loves being pet and gets along …
