All I want to say is this: I said months ago that there was a ban on gun research and no oneRead More believed me. I don't care what his studies say. I'm just glad this article finally says in it's first sentence what I have been saying for a long time. Small victory for moi! I'm off for some ice cream!

Oldtimer -- They took away all of the weapons in Britain and now they have the highest incidence ofRead More knife stabbings in the world. It is not the guns it is the evil in the thugs that causes these deaths. If a thug knows you are armed he will not cross you but if they know you don't have a weapon you are game to them. Direct your research to the thugs and their families to get to the root of the problem, not the law abiding person.

Queena Armstrong Knox April 24, 2014 at 07:41 pm
Actually this is usually a sign of gestational diabetes. But not always....Alison and Erin. AndRead More BIGBAKER I've heard of bigger babies being born at home years ago too but that gets into the whole accuracy of the way they were weighed. My daughter weighed 9lb 1oz. I'm average size. My birth weight was around 7 pounds. My husband was a premie and weighed about 5 pounds. But he was a big man. Not huge. He was 6ft 1in and weighed about 190 at his heaviest. I'm 5' 3" and weighed 165 at full term. Sometimes the size of the baby is determined by ancestors long dead! My son weighed 7lb 12oz and he was born 4 weeks premature! Imagine where he was headed! So don't go blaming things that may have NOTHING to do with it!

If the old man does get 1st or 2nd degree murder charges, the best thing to do in a home invasion ifRead More you don't have time to call the police is to go hide in a closet and pray they don't find you (and your family) and if they DO find you, DON'T look at them!!!.... When I graduated from LT in 1967 we were told that we were the second best high school in IllinoisRead More (New Trier was number one) and among the top ten nationally. Now New Trier is #15 and LT is #40?!? What has happened in the intervening decades. If the proposal to do away with class rank is any indicator I suspect my alma mater is succumbing more and more to the trendy aspects of modern education and moving away from expecting accomplishment.

I don't disagree with you that we're becoming less and less a free country but it's wrong to blameRead More democrats alone. It wasn't dems alone that passed the patriot act. It hasn't been dems alone that have been re-uping it since it was passed the first time. On how bad Hillary will be as a president. Every president is bad in some ways. Reagan raised taxes more than a dozen times. Bush took us to war on two fronts with no way to pay for it. Clinton signed DOMA and DADT. Obama gave away the farm in order to get the Affordable Care Act passed. Papa Bush said that atheists shouldn't be considered Americans. Sure Hillary will be a bad president in some ways.... they are all bad in some way. I can tell you this much though, any president is going to be a worse president when the publicly stated goal of the opposition is to obstruct that president at any and all opportunities. The dems did it to Bush. The republican'ts are doing it to Obama. It's like Palestine and Israel, they'll fight to the death out of spite and habit, neither one of them knowing which one threw the first punch and not caring because winning is the only goal. What America needs are citizens that go into government for the good of the country instead of the good of their party.
Michael Hipp April 24, 2014 at 02:03 pm
Oh, one last point on your last post B. Dub. "Hillary presidency combined with a DemocraticRead More Congress." Ain't gonna happen. Republicant's have gerrymandered the states to absolute death. They have the House for the foreseeable future and they have a good chance at getting the Senate. I can't guarantee you who's going to win in 2016 but I can very well guarantee you that no one party will take executive and legislative branches, both.

The caller used Skype, via the Internet, and will probably never be found if he took certainRead More precautions unless he's running his mouth about this prank.
Bob West April 24, 2014 at 05:20 pm
@ eddie, I wouldn't mention any specific phone-calling service in case any other arseholes areRead More looking for tips. But for better or worse, those calls are traceable. They have "add-ons" that can fool your friends, but certainly not the NSA. BTW, that phone service was bought by Microsoft a couple of years ago- so much for any illusion of confidentiality. By using it, you "opt in" to give up your privacy, just like with G-mail. Using a computer to make a prank call is a dumb move in itself. Any computer transmits a wealth of information. Non-smart phones are a lot less traceable than anything else. Have you ever seen how many items advertisers and other web sites use to uniquely identify your computer? They can't tell your name but track your unique computer. It's called "computer fingerprinting." As soon as you give your name at a web site they track, they've got you. Check this site sometime to see how unique your computer is-- https://panopticlick.eff.org/ .... I suspect that nobody's putting much effort into tracing this call, because in the big scheme of things, they've got more serious things to deal with. (Unfortunately, unlike our local PDs.) Shame this idiot got so much publicity from his crime. I think the glorifying news "perp walk" should be stopped in virtually all cases.
Sue1 April 24, 2014 at 02:01 pm
@B not sure you could say only Oak Forest residents could attend the fest. I understand what you'reRead More saying, the same could be said of the Fleadh. One thing I have seen some communities do is charge an admittance fee. It seems to cut back on the number of people just hanging out if they have to pay $10 to do so.
B April 24, 2014 at 02:20 pm
@sue1 That is a good idea also. Maybe free to residents, and a $20.00 admittance fee to allRead More non-residents. Perhaps cutting off the alcohol at a earlier time might limit some of the fights and drunk and belligerent people, as well as D.U.I's. Now, shouldn't the people running this town be brainstorming ideas about the problems oak fest creates, instead of the residents doing the brainstorming? When Oak Fest first started it was a family friendly atmosphere. Now, it has turned into a drinking fest, and a breeding ground for hooligans from different towns just waiting for a fight.
Baba Wawa April 24, 2014 at 05:42 pm
""Maybe free to residents, and a $20.00 admittance fee to all non-residents." $20Read More admittance fee to non-residents? That's insane. You want to help screen people in the mile-long lines to check people's residency? The whole point of Oak Fest is that it's FREE, unlike Drunk Fest -- I mean Irish Fest with its $15 admission. Every fest has undesireables attending, fee or no fee. What a stupid idea.

I got you Kevin. I f you delete the point of contention then the debate is incoherent. The BlackRead More Panther of poetry was defending his viewpoint. I disagree with race based politics but he was standing up in the arena of ideas Then poof...( hello Patch?)... he was gone. I know the Panthers have a terror tactic history, but I thought media has forgiven the past. In Philly 08, Holder allowed military uniformed poll watchers to prevent any 2nd party participation with obvious intimidation. I appreciate Patch. We gotta talk this stuff out. Maybe the panther crossed the line his last comment we did not see, and they scrubbed up a bit. What ever happened, I do appreciate the Patch forums. It is a good local thing for info and exchange. How ya like me now.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Tamara April 24, 2014 at 11:27 pm
**Common Core is a Violation of the U.S. Constitution and Three Federal Statutes (1) GeneralRead More Education Provisions Act (GEPA), which forbids the federal government from meddling in the state’s education programs. (2) Department of Education Organization Act (DEOA), which prohibits the federal government to develop curriculum and program of instruction, textbooks and other instructional materials. (3) Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), which prohibits the federal government to mandate, direct, or control a State, local educational agency.
Tamara April 24, 2014 at 11:38 pm
States take $4.3 B “Race to the Top” & agree to implement common standards in the USRead More without understanding the true costs – academically, financially and otherwise. Common Core (CC) was sold with big money drops by the federal government and the Gates Foundation and great sounding verbiage. *******Meanwhile the Gate’s kids attend Lakeside; an elite private school that considers their students, according to their web-site, “generally more advanced than average” and won’t be subject to CC or the standardized testing which the public schools will undergo. Good enough for my kids but not his? I DON'T THINK SO MR. ELITIST!
Tamara April 25, 2014 at 12:27 am
Minimum Standards - I WISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you pro-CC people also ok with theRead More related data collection on our children that will be collected at teh federal level and sold to third parties? *****The schools are going to record data from pre-k on through workforce. Everything about your child will be kept in a database. From what snacks he or she ate in preschool to what age they began to read. How they interact with other students and teachers and what extracurricular activities they do. They will know the family backgrounds, income, and voting status. They will record how their brains work in what answers they pick on assessments. They will note any behavior problems and compare their data to other kids’ data... ***************Read the rest of this PolitiChicks.tv article here: http://politichicks.tv/column/common-core-education-part-2-behaviors/#twHEB6p6V2f64WeD.99 This is scary Hitler stuff!

FOR THOSE WHO LIKE AMAZON PRIME OVER NETFLIX: Here's an interesting article from today (23 Apr 2014)Read More about how Amazon Prime just got HBO to stream at least some of its older content, plus "HBO GO," to Amazon's new Fire TV box, thereby making NetFlix upset because NetFlix (nor any other streaming service, including HULU) has never been able to get any HBO content; and so Amazon has scored a real coup! Phaedrus Pirsig April 23, 2014 at 11:56 am
TC, Illinois has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, pretty sure we could fillRead More those teaching spots overnight. With the technology we have today we could easily supplement the cost of these state breaking pensions that fraudulently get bumped up in a teacher's final years. Charter schools are doing a better job without union teachers. During Chicago's teacher strike I listened to union teachers that barely spoke English. No complaints about the salaries, just get rid of the pensions.
