Gingerwood Ready to Get This Pool Party Started

The opening of Oak Forest's community swimming pool is set for Saturday after being rescheduled from last weekend. Find out everything you need to enjoy your first day poolside, including the weekend forecast.

Gingerwood Pool opening. Take 2.

Oak Forest's community pool was scheduled to open last weekend, but cool temperatures and rainy weather put a damper on that plan. But the volunteers who operate the pool are ready to try again this weekend, and nature looks like it will be a bit more cooperative this time around.

Gingerwood Pool will open at noon Saturday, June 8, weather permitting.

Here's what you need to know before you head over to 5124 Aldersyde Road to take a dip on this opening weekend.

Pool Essentials

  • The Hours: The pool is open from noon to 8 p.m. daily, weather permitting, throughout the summer.
  • Who Can Use It: Gingerwood is open to Oak Forest residents, and kids younger than 16 must be there with an adult. Residents from surrounding communities also can use the pool by purchasing special non-resident memberships.
  • How Much Does It Cost? Daily passes run $7, and a single membership is $120. Family memberships (for five people) cost $180, and a maximum of three members can be added at $10 each.
  • Special Occasions: People can rent out the pool for parties during off hours. Morning rental times from 10 a.m. to noon cost $50 (plus a $20 lifeguard fee). Night rentals times from 8 to 11 p.m. cost $60 (plus a $30 lifeguard fee).

Weekend Weather

The forecast for the pool's first weekend is a vast improvement on what it was like last weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Well, at least Saturday is an improvement.
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high of 75
  • Sunday: Expect a 70 percent chance of rain, including thunderstorms. Windy, with a high of 76.

Frosty Fundraiser

The pool will hold a 2 Sisters Frozen Custard fundraiser day Sunday, June 23. Custard cups will be sold for $2. The event is made possible by the owners of the Midlothian custard show, Pat and Lisa Callaghan, who are also pool members.
