Gingerwood Pool Opening Rescheduled to June 8 (Updated)

Weather permitting, Oak Forest's community pool begins its summer season this weekend. But will the weather be permitting? Find out what the forecast says, as well as everything else you need to enjoy your first day poolside.

UPDATED (10:21 a.m. Saturday, June 1):

Weather won out this weekend, and it has postponed the opening of Gingerwood Pool until noon Saturday, June 8.

Original Story

Memorial Day is a distant memory, and students and teachers are riding high on end-of-the-school-year euphoria (parents, not so much).

All the signs point to summer fever setting in.

Still not convinced? Need a final example? Starting Saturday, June 1, Oak Forest's Gingerwood Community Pool opens for the first time in 2013.

Here's what you need to know before you head over to 5124 Aldersyde Road to take a dip on this opening weekend.

Pool Essentials

  • The Hours: The pool is open from noon to 8 p.m. daily, weather permitting, throughout the summer.
  • Who Can Use It: Gingerwood is open to Oak Forest residents, and kids younger than 16 must be there with an adult. Residents from surrounding communities also can use the pool by purchasing special non-resident memberships.
  • How Much Does It Cost? Daily passes run $7, and a single membership is $120. Family memberships (for five people) cost $180, and a maximum of three members can be added at $10 each.
  • Special Occasions: People can rent out the pool for parties during off hours. Morning rental times from 10 a.m. to noon cost $50 (plus a $20 lifeguard fee). Night rentals times from 8 to 11 p.m. cost $60 (plus a $30 lifeguard fee).

Weekend Weather

The forecast for the pool's first weekend resembles what it's been like for the past few days, according to the National Weather Service: warm and windy with the chance of rain.
  • Saturday: Mostly cloudy, with a high around 79 and a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. The rain is likely to roll in after 4pm, though.
  • Sunday: Again, mostly cloudy, with a 20 percent chance of rain before 1 p.m. The high is only expected to be about 64.
