Oak Forest Grad Tim Byrdak Pins Down a Job in the Pen

Left-handed pitcher will come out of the bullpen for the New York Mets. Meanwhile, Bengals' baseball and softball teams slowed by inclement weather.

Oak Forest baseball alumnus Tim Byrdak has made the New York Mets roster, according to Andy Martino, Mets beat writer for the New York Daily News. Byrdak is a lefty who will come out of the bullpen.

The MLB regular season gets under way next week. Oak Forest alum Jason Frasor and the Toronto Blue Jays open up at home against the Minnesota Twins on Friday. Byrdak and the Mets open at Florida on Friday.

Twice as Nice: Emily & Emily

The 2009 state champion and 2010 sectional champion Oak Forest softball team launched its 2011 season on the right foot, defeating Shepard 3-0 in its opener. Emily Norton pitched a no-hitter, while Emily Naegele went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, including a home run. The Bengals’ games against Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park were postponed.

Maziur Provides Leadership

The Oak Forest boys volleyball team has started the season in rousing fashion. The Bengals are 2-1, including a . What’s remarkable about the start is that Oak Forest only returns four players from last year’s squad. Senior Dylan Maziur is leading the way for the Bengals in his third season playing varsity ball.

“Maziur is raring and ready to go,” coach Amanda Brown said. “But everybody else is going to take a little time to catch up to speed.”

Oak Forest graduated eight seniors last year, but the Bengals still have a goal of capturing a second straight conference championship.

“We’re going to respect all of our opponents and show up to play every day,” Brown said. “(Winning a conference championship) is our goal. We’re working for it.”

The Oak Forest boys volleyball team did fall to Illiana Christian on Thursday, 25-21, 25-19.

“We did not pass the ball well at all, and that led us to commit a lot of mistakes in other areas of our game,” Brown said.

* The Oak Forest baseball team opened its season with a 1-1 tie at Joliet West. The Bengals' game against Lincoln-Way North on Friday was postponed because of temperatures that hovered in the 30s.
