The Skinny: Sandburg's 55-50 boys basketball victory over Lockport on Friday night in Lockport was a tale of two halves. Sandburg's offense and defense were clicking in the first half as the Eagels built a 30-10 lead. Sandburg's defense limited the Porters to less than 25-percent shooting in the first half and the Eagles dominated on the boards. Lockport, using an up-tempo offense and relying heavily on the fastbreak, began to build momentum in the second half after trailing by 21 midway through the third quarter. The Porters put together a 14-5 run to close out the game, but it was too little, too late.
Patch MVP: Sandburg's Nick Lehnerer had 17 points, five rebounds and one assist.
Key Stats: Sandburg and Lockport were even in shooting percentage from inside the three-point arc by the end of the game, with both teams shooting a tidy 50 percent. However, the Eagles were 2-of-3 from the three-point arc and the Porters were 6-of-22. Sandburg also was 15-of-21 from the free throw line. The Eagles outrebounded the Porters 34-11.
Sandburg Leaders: Ken Payonk had 16 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Malek Harris had 13 points, 10 rebounds, one block and one steal. Joe Kuligoski had two points, five rebounds, one steal and one block.
Lockport Leaders: Courtney Cole had 21 points to lead all scores and three steals. Dexter Taylor had 14 points and two rebounds. Kyle Ward had 10 points, three rebounds and two steals.
Quotable: Sandburg coach Todd Allen: "I thought the guys did a nice job coming out at halftime. Lockport made a little run, and we responded. For about three quarters, we played really well, but Lockport played a great fourth quarter. They played hard and made their shots. It's tough to win here, and I thought the kids did a nice job here to get it done."
Team Records: Sandburg is 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the Southwest Suburban Blue. Lockport falls to 3-1 and 0-1 in the SWSC Blue.
What's Next: Both teams will face Bolingbrook next. The Porters will face the Raiders in Bolingbrook on Dec. 6. The Eagles will host the Raiders on Dec. 9.
