Boys Basketball: Short-handed Sandburg Falls to Bolingbrook

Bolingbrook 47, Sandburg 33: The Eagles, playing without their leading scorer and leading rebounder, went cold against the visiting Raiders.

The Skinny: The Eagles were without their leading scorer, Nick Lehnerer, and their leading rebounder, Malik Harris, for undisclosed reasons Friday night. The two were sorely missed. The Bolingbrook Raiders were able to jump out in front early on, using a 15-2 second-quarter run en route to a 47-33 victory in Orland Park. The Raiders coasted to a 22-15 lead at the half, and they sealed the win by shutting down Sandburg in the third.

Patch MVP: Bolingbrook's Nick Malonga had 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Key Stats: The Eagles were just 12-for-33 from the floor, including 2-for-18 from behind the 3-point arc. Bolingbrook was 12-for-34 from the floor, including 5-for-13 from 3-point range. The Raiders outrebounded the Eagles 24-17 and forced eight turnovers. The Eagles forced 11 Raiders turnovers.

Bolingbrook Leaders: In addition to Malonga, Alec Boyd notched 10 points from the bench, while Ben Moore posted nine points, six rebounds, two big blocks and a steal.

Sandburg Leaders: Joe Kuligoski had 14 points, six rebounds and three steals. Ken Payonk had 13 points, eight boards and two steals. Brian Dace had six points, a steal and an assist.

Quotable I: Bolingbrook Coach Rob Brost: "It ended up being a possession game rather than an up-and-down, which is what we'd rather have. A credit to our kids is that we were able to adjust to the possession game and play it right. This is a tough place to play and a tough place to win."

Quotable II: Sandburg Coach Todd Allen: "I thought we came out well and started with some good energy. Bolingbrook started making threes and we had some trouble shooting the ball. Defensively, we held them somewhat in check, but we had some costly turnovers."

Team Records: Bolingbrook improves to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the SWSC Blue. Sandburg falls to 1-4 and 1-1.

What's Next: Sandburg hits the road Saturday, Dec. 10 for an early evening game against Lyons Township. Bolingbrook will visit Nequa Valley on Wednesday, Dec. 14.
