Athlete of the Week: Oak Forest's Coleman Leaps into Bengals' Record Book

Bengals junior breaks school long jump record earlier in the season than expected.

Oak Forest junior Tevin Coleman had high aspirations this season. Little did he know that he would reach one of his goals this early in the season.

On Tuesday at the District 228 Quad Meet at Hillcrest, Coleman broke the school record for the long jump with a distance of 23 feet, 3 ¾ inches.

“I was expecting to break it this year because last year I was close,” said Coleman, who jumped 23 feet, 3 ¼ inches last season at the state meet, good for second place. “I thought I would beat it later on when I got in shape and was fully ready.”

Coleman broke the school record set by Adam Crothers in 1996 (23 feet, 3 ½ inches).

He hopes to improve on his jump even more the rest of the season and winning state. Coleman is also a running back in football, and he plans on playing football in college.
