Turner Loses D228 School Board Seat to Newcomer

Small business owner Larry Canning made an impressive showing Tuesday, winning a seat on the Bremen school board. While trustees Evelyn Gleason and Deborah Stearns were re-elected, incumbent Marc Turner couldn't earn enough votes.

CORRECTION (10:39 a.m. Friday, April 12): An earlier version of this story had incorrect information on where and when Larry Canning went to high school. The story has been corrected. 

Two of the three incumbents running for re-election to the Bremen High School District 228 Board of Education were able to retain their seats Tuesday.

But Marc Turner, who has been a trustee since 2005, was ousted thanks to the impressive showing by Tinley Park resident Larry Canning.

The area small business owner's vote total was second among D228 board candidates, only behind current Board President Deborah Stearns by 60 votes. Evelyn Gleason, who has been on the board since 1993, also retained her seat.

"Thank you all for your support! WE WON!!!" Canning wrote on his Facebook wall Tuesday night. "I will not let you down."

A Tinley Park resident and a 1985 graduate of Hillcrest High School with a background in education, Canning has been critical of the academic performance of the district's high schools and promised to help turn this around if elected.

"District 228 has consistently underperformed over the last several years," he wrote on his campaign's Facebook page. "Our district continues to score at the bottom or near bottom on just about all state standardized testing. Oak Forest and Tinley Park High Schools are in year two of academic early warning while Bremen High School and Hillcrest High School are on academic watch status. Bremen made the list the past five years and Hillcrest made it the past nine years. As taxpayers we must demand better results. …"
