St. Damian Fourth-Grader Becomes Next Mayor—for a Day

St. Damian fourth grader Luke Baldwin called the shots at Tuesday's City Council meeting, as he filled in for Oak Forest Mayor Hank Kuspa for the day.

Luke Baldwin loves his social studies class at , and he thinks government is "kind of cool." He even aspires to be a congressman someday.

Winning a 'Mayor for a Day' raffle prize, then, was just what he could have wished for. Baldwin landed the role during St. Damian's .

"Government is really only the only subject I like," Luke told Patch.

He spent March 13 with , touring city hall, the clerk’s office and police and fire departments, but his favorite was public works.

He enjoyed the tours of each department, and liked meeting staff members. He wrapped up the day by leading the early portions of the council meeting. He took roll call, ran down agenda items, and called for motions. The day gave him a small taste of what a career in legislature might look like—in addition to the taste of for lunch.
