Hille Students Step into City Government Roles

A group of students from Hille Middle School's National Junior Honor Society joined the aldermen and Mayor Hank Kuspa during the Sept. 13 City Council meeting. The students played a part in the meeting, assuming some of the council members' tasks.

A group of students from were given the opportunity to play a part in government Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Students from the school's National Junior Honor Society sat alongside aldermen and Mayor Hank Kuspa during the meeting, taking part in the administrative tasks, including reading agenda items and taking roll. Each student had an opportunity to take the microphone and act as mayor—though student Marley Majetic was the one to sit beside him. Student Jason Lorenz played the role of city clerk throughout the meeting, quickly getting the hang of taking roll call on each agenda item.

"The kids got to see the 'behind the scenes' of the process," said National Junior Honor Society moderator Patrick Raleigh.

The students will be returning again for future meetings, said Principal Courtney Orzel, as part of the school's effort to show students a different side of government.

Eighth-grader Kayla Roberts enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the meeting.

"I was kind of nervous at first, but then when I got the hang of it, it was really fun," she said. "I liked discussing the different agenda items, hearing the people's say on each one."
