Free Genealogy Workshops at GSU

Governors State University Library is offering four genealogy workshops this spring.  These workshops may be taken singly or as a series. They are free and open to the public.

“Starting Your Family Tree” begins the workshop series on Feb. 24, from 2-4 p.m. in room D2401B. This workshop helps beginners by providing a comprehensive check list of questions to ask relatives, what documents to collect, and where to find them.

The next workshop topic is “Using FamilySearch.org in Your Genealogy Research.” Family Search is one of the fastest growing free online websites to use in the search for vital family records. Basic computer skills are required for this workshop, which will be held on March 10 from 4:30-6:30 p.m., in the Computer Lab (D2435).

The third workshop in the series, “Finding Those Vital Records in Your Genealogy Research,” is offered on March 31 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Computer Lab (D2435). Participants learn how to find birth, marriage, and death certificates from indexes, online websites, county offices, and archive depositories. Basic computer skills are required for this workshop.

The final workshop on genealogy is “Breaking Down Those Brick Walls in Your Genealogy.” It is offered on April 21 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Computer Lab (D2435). This workshop will help remove roadblocks that may make the discovery of valuable family information difficult. Basic computer skills are required.
