District 228 Board Gives Sweeping Approval to Contract Extensions, Three Personnel Moves

At the June 21 Board of Education meeting for Bremen High School District 228, members agreed to new books for AP classes, school improvements and a student disciplinary action.

The school year may have ended for Bremen High School District 228 students, but the school board is still on the clock.

The board met at Oak Forest High School Tuesday to discuss and vote on topics ranging from district contracts with various companies to personnel matters.

The board opened the meeting by recognizing IHSA Class 3A State Runners Up the Oak Forest Bengals baseball team for its second-place finish during the 2010–11 season. Following the recognition, the board heard presentations from the township's treasurer and then a presentation on special education within the district.

Afterward, it moved on to voting matters. Before entering into a two-hour closed executive session to discuss personnel issues, the board voted on 17 issues within the district.

The board voted to approve all 17 items on its docket before going into closed session.

Among the items approved by the board were:

  • Contract extensions with winter athletic suppliers and equipment bids with various businesses
  • A one-year contract extension with Sodexo Cafeteria Service
  • Three-year contract extension with Aramark Towel Service
  • A one-year extension with HR Imaging,
  • A three-year extension for athletic training service
  • An agreement with Pel Industries to sell Hillcrest High School clothing at Walmart in County Club Hills.

The board also approved new textbooks for web design, AP European history and two new AP geography books. Several doors at Oak Forest High School will also be replaced with new, fire resistant doors.

After the closed session, the board approved a salary and benefit recommendation for non-union support staff, building administrators and 12-month administrators within the district. The board also voted to expel a district student for the first semester of the 2011–12 year.

The board terminated the employment of Alma Ollarvia and Juan Sanchez. All four of the votes were met with unanimous approval.

The next Bremen School District 228 Board of Education meeting will be held at Bremen High School on Tuesday, July 19, at 7 p.m.
