District 146 Gives Back to Tinley Park PAWS

A group of District 146 teachers, staff, and paraprofessionals focus on a different fundraising goal each month.

The animals at Tinley Park PAWS will be treated to some new collars, toys and fresh bedding, after staff received a sizable donation from District 146.

Teachers and staff members from D146 joined together as "District 146 Gives" and collected paper towels, rags, cat and dog food, leashes and collars for donation to the shelter.

"The goal of this committee is to give back to the surrounding communities through various giving service projects," wrote Julie Harris, Kruse Education Center 5th grade teacher, and president of the district's teacher union.

All schools and the administration center participated in collecting the donations,  and two representatives from each building stopped by PAWS Tuesday to drop off the donation.

The committee is made up of 50 members, with a monthly fundraising focus. In September, the group organized a school supply drive in which they collected and stuffed 65 backpacks to give to children in need. November's focus will be a coat drive for Tinley Park-based nonprofit Together We Cope. The group will partner with Together We Cope to collect gently used and new coats, hats and mittens. The items will be available to students and their siblings in District 146. Any child in need of a winter coat will be given a voucher to take to Together We Cope.
