BOOK REVIEW 'Insurgent'

A follow up review to Divergent

Insurgent
By: Veronica Roth
Veronica Roth comes back pretty strong after her success with Divergent with the second novel in the trilogy, Insurgent. Anyone who hasn't read the Divergent Review may want to go and do that before reading this otherwise confusion will ensue:http://oakforest.patch.com/groups/rachel-fimbiantis-blog/p/bp--book-review-divergent
The story picks up right where the first left off in the aftermath of a giant battle scene that spans about the last 3-4 chapters of the book. There have been great losses on both sides and Tris has seen and done some things that she won’t ever be ok with. No, I am not going to tell you what because that would tread into major spoiler territory and I’m not here to do that. The rest of the novel mostly deals with Tris reconnecting with people that went MIA, dealing with her inner demons, and trying to take down the enemy in the midst of a bloody war.
I continue to see amazing similarities between this trilogy and The Hunger Games in the plotting, story lines, characters, and even the quality of the books. Divergent, I thought, was a good book, not perfect but good, and I thought the same of Hunger Games. Catching Fire was ok, not as good as the first with a few more problems of its own and Insurgent kept with that. I just hope that I don’t feel the same way about Allegiant as  I did about Mockingjay because then we're  going to have another book I want the throw out a window. We may also have another Trilogy turned Duo in my eyes because, to me, Mockingjay doesn't exist and the last movie is coming out the November. Yeah it got nasty.
Most of my problems with the book revolved around plotting issues. The one big thing I noticed about this novel is that it never really takes a break which I'm not sure is something I should complain about. I suppose the book could have no plot at all and be ridiculously boring, so it could be worse.
Another problem being them constantly moving from place to place and the location of their residence never remaining the same. It created some confusion with introduction of each new spot and keeping their plan of attack of the hour straight and which character is where and doing what.
There are also a few too many characters switching sides for my taste. I read the book a month ago and I can remember three off the top of my head. Two of them can’t seem to choose a side and just seem to switch because they’re bored, and one of them makes a bit more sense. It seems like every time you turn around there’s a new traitor and while granted this is a war, it’s just that there doesn't need to be that many.
As far as sequels go, this one holds its own. I just really hope that I actually want to remember the last book when it comes out.
