VIDEO: Fifth Ward Will Welcome New Face to Alderman Role

Daniel Ensing defeated incumbent Nancy Hullinger and two other opponents to take over the 5th Ward Alderman seat. Ensing talked with Patch about his goals for the next four years.

After eight years, residents of the 5th Ward have chosen a new face to replace incumbent Ald. Nancy Hullinger.

Unofficial results from Tuesday, April 5 name newcomer Daniel Ensing as the ward's new representative on the city council.

Patch caught up with Ensing at his victory gathering at Blarney Stone Pub Tuesday night.

"I want to say thanks to everyone who came out to vote," Ensing said. "I don't care who they voted for, or why they came out to vote. It's your chance to peaceably take action against your government, any time anyone comes out to vote."

Who he is:
A husband and father of two who's lived in Oak Forest for 33 years. For more, check out his

What he wants to accomplish:
"I want to start exploring and seeing what the reception is to a neighborhood watch program. I want to see increased communication between the residents and public safety officials. Residents should be able to meet officers, fire personnel and the people protecting them."

What's the weak spot he plans to take on?
"Communication between elected officials and residents of the 5th ward. There are four distinct areas, I'd like to try out rotating meetings with people in the area.

"Anyone who knows me will tell you, I don't like to sit and gab on the phone. I'd like to sit down, face-to-face."

Ensing also said he'd like to start a ward-exclusive email mailing, similar to those sent by Aldermen Simon, Clemons and Toland.

Any words for your predecessor Nancy Hullinger?
"I never ran this campaign against her, specifically. I think I have some good ideas for the 5th ward, and for the city of Oak Forest. She did a great job for eight years. I appreciate what she gave us. She still has a big part in the 5th ward."

And finally, one thing your constituents would be surprised to learn about you:
I'm a big fan of the Go-Go's.
