Tax Breaks Granted for 2 Oak Forest Businesses

A signage company and a restaurant both requested tax incentives through the Cook County Assessor's Office, which require Oak Forest's support.

Two Oak Forest businesses will see a long-term break on their property taxes after the gave the nod this week for two tax incentive requests.

S & J Construction on West 166th Street and Yamini, a carryout restaurant proposed for 5220 W. 159th St., both filed for a tax incentive program through the Cook County Assessor's Office. Requests made through the county office's program require approval by the local municipality—in this case, the City of Oak Forest.

S & J sought the break to build an addition on the property located at 4245 W. 166th St. The company, which buildings overhead interstate signage, wants the addition to provide a way for trucks to drive through the warehouse for purposes of picking up equipment. The area also is the city's largest property zoned for industrial use.

The incentive reduces the business' property tax rate for next ten years.

S & J requested renewal to the same incentive request made 18 months ago Community Development Director Adam Dotson.

Similarly, Yamini asked for the incentive to develop the old Dunkin Donuts site on 159th, which has been vacant since 2008. The owners intend to make repairs and upgrade the building, including putting in a new roof, according to the city.

Dotson said the Yamini has been “highly encouraged” to make facade improvements as well.

On Tuesday, Alderman Rich Simon expressed a desire to see the property significantly updated.

"I would hope that during the process of doing a new business there, that they will renew the parking lot and spruce up the front of that building to a great degree, not a little bit,” Simon said.
