Mom Says Food from Tinley Jewel-Osco Gave Son Salmonella: Lawsuit

The boy tested positive for salmonella infection, just before the deli was shut down after severak people fell ill from its products.

A woman is suing Jewel-Osco in Tinley Park, claiming food from the store's deli gave her son salmonella earlier this month.

Colleen Ghelfi contends the tainted food caused her son's "severe gastrointestinal symptoms” including diarrhea and abdominal cramps, according to the suit. The boy tested positive for a salmonella infection June 10, Sun-Times Media reports.

The deli in the same store, 17117 Harlem Ave., was shut down briefly June 11, after the Cook County Health Department was notified that several people had become ill from food at the store. The deli reopened later the same day.

The suit alleges product liability, negligence and breach of warranty in connection with the outbreak on the part of Jewel-Osco.

Ghelfi is seeking an unspecified amount of monetary damages.
