$60 Water Bill Fee Set for Those Facing Shut-Off Orders

City Council changes deadline and fee structure for water-bill deadbeats at meeting this week.

If your water service is scheduled to be shut off for failure to pay bills, you must have your payment into the city clerk's office by 9 a.m. on the day service will end or face a new $60 service fee.

The City Council amended the municipal code this week to set that fee.

Previously, the code stated that there were two separate $30 fees for turning water off and on but did not set a deadline for payment.

City Clerk Scott Burkhardt said residents receive a 45-day notice that water is to be turned off, and on recurring circumstances the front office staff has seen that once water is being turned off on one side of the street, residents from the other side rush in to pay their bill without needing to pay the fines.

“We will make this effective by time. No matter where they are on the list they have to pay $60 before 9 a.m. It’s one fee at one time and it will make it fair,” he said.
