Video Surveillance Helps Cops Nab Man Tied to String of Vehicle Break-Ins

Oak Forest Police say they have apprehended a man believed to be responsible for at least three vehicle break-ins, an attempted residential burglary and one count of forgery since the beginning of January.

A Scarborough Fare resident used garage keys to access three vehicles in the condo complex and could be responsible for an attempted residential burglary and possibly more in a rash of more than 20 similar instances, said.

Roger Emmering, 22, has been charged with three counts of car burglary, one count of forgery, and one attempted residential burglary, detectives said Wednesday. The three vehicle break-ins took place in early January. Police charged Emmering Jan. 6 after a traffic stop regarding Emmering's revoked license.

Video surveillance from a nearby 7-Eleven showed Emmering making a purchase using a credit card stolen from one of the vehicles, police said. In the footage, Emmering is seen nursing wounds to his hands, which police suspected could have resulted from breaking a car window.

Police said that as a resident of the complex, Emmering might have used his garage key to access the vehicles, which were parked near their owners' respective buildings. Police "put two and two together" and realized that the suspect had to be a resident. Emmering also admitted to an attempted residential burglary a week prior, police said.

Additional charges could be pending, detectives said. Emmering is being held on bond until a court date is set.
