South Suburban DUI Arrests, Oct. 7

Sleepy, swerving, speeding drivers in this week's roundup of drunken driving arrests in the Southland.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS

Sept. 26: Marty L. McKemie, 43, of Felton, Calif., was arrested and cited for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without insurance, and disobeying a stop sign at 4:08 a.m. at 16th Place and Chicago Road. A patrol officer pulled McKemie over after he disobeyed a stop sign and caused the officer to swerve into oncoming traffic, according to the report. While speaking with McKemie, the officer detected the strong odor of alcohol on his breath and noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and watery and that his speech was slurred. When asked, McKemie told the officer that he had been drinking. After failing a field sobriety test, McKemie was arrested and transported to CHPD, where a breathalyzer test showed his blood alcohol level to be 0.197. He was given a Nov. 7 Markham court date, and his rented 2012 Ford Mustang was towed and impounded.

Sept. 28: Diane Schick, 48, Frankfort, who was allegedly intoxicated while driving home from the New Lenox Metra Train Station, reportedly hit some construction barricades when she turned off of Route 30 onto Wolf Road.

Police say that while she drove away from the scene of the accident, the car's tires were damaged. She reportedly drove a short distance and then stopped in a nearby lot. She was noticed standing outside of the damaged vehicle by police.

According to the report, she appeared intoxicated. She was arrested and charged with DUI and property damage as well as for her involvement in a hit and run accident. She posted bond and was released.

OAK FOREST

Omar A. Amezcua, 24, of the 16000 block of S. Cicero Avenue, was charged with DUI, DUI with bac of .08 or more, speeding, 63 mph in a 35 mph zone, and improper lane usage., after police stopped him in the 15400 block of S. Cicero Avenue. Police stopped Amezcua after witnessing the car he was driving speed past them and watching the car swerve off the road, nearly striking a light pole before regaining control and returning to the roadway.

During the stop, officers noted that Amezcua fumbled for his license, stumbled exiting his car and had a strong odor of alcohol on coming from his person. Officers had Amezcua perform several standard field sobriety tests, which he could not pass. Amezcua then submitted to a portable breath test, which returned a result of .169 bac. Amezcua was placed in custody and taken to the Oak Forest Police Station where he submitted to another breath test, this time blowing a .175.

Amezcua was scheduled to appear in court at the Bridgeview Courthouse at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 20.

ORLAND PARK

Sept. 22: Police saw a man sleeping behind the wheel of car in the 14200 block of Clearview Drive around 3:05 a.m. The driver wouldn’t wake up despite repeated tries by the responding officer, according to the report. The man could barely keep his eyes open, he was unable to perform field sobriety and was transported to Palos Community Hospital, according to the report. Officers later found a flask in the car with alcohol inside, police said. Christopher F. Sigel, 18, of the 13600 block of Lincolnshire Drive in Orland Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Sept. 17: Police saw a man asleep behind the wheel of a car with engine running and in gear around 4:10 a.m. in a westbound lane of 143rd Street at LaGrange Road. The driver woke up as the officer put the car in park, and he smelled like alcohol, police said. He later slurred his speech and failed field sobriety tests, police said. John R. Osborne, 24, of the 14600 block of Mustang Drive in Homer Glen, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and disobeying a traffic control light.

PALOS HEIGHTS

Sept. 30: Majd D. Zayed, 22, of the 16900 block of South 92nd Avenue in Orland Hills, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a license and speeding, according to a report. Zayed's vehicle was stopped for speeding at about 1:58 a.m. near 12600 S. Harlem Ave., police said. He was then arrested for DUI. His bond was set at $3,000.

TINLEY PARK

Sept. 16: Andrzej Hauer, 24, of the 7800 block of West Melvina Avenue in Burbank, was charged with driving under the influence and improper lane use and DUI after being pulled over around 11:30 p.m. for swerving between lanes in the 6900 block of West 159th St. Hauer was released on bond, and his next court date is Oct. 12.
