South Suburban DUI Arrests, May 5

A word of advice: It's probably a good idea to stop driving when the airbags are deployed and an axle is broken. Read about this and other reports in Patch's weekly roundup of Southland DUI arrests.

 

EVERGREEN PARK

April 26: Christine Y. Blades, 46, of the 200 block of South Torrence Avenue in Sauk Village, was charged with driving under the influence, failing to dim headlights, using unsafe equipment and driving with a defective window, according to a report.

Blades was stopped at about 12:11 a.m., near 98th Street and Western Avenue, after an officer noticed the vehicle's bright headlights were on. The officer also reported seeing sparks coming from the rear of the vehicle and believed the car's axle might have been broken.

Police reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and noticed that two airbags inside the car had deployed. Blades was arrested after performing field sobriety tests, and she also refused to take a breath test, police said.

OAK FOREST

April 27: Sherri A. Urbanski, 40, of the 158000 block of Leclaire Avenue in Oak Forest, was charged with driving under the influence, improper lane use, not wearing a seat belt and driving with a suspended license, according to a report. Police stopped a car traveling eastbound in the westbound lane in the 5500 block of 159th Street, the report stated.

An officer could smell a “moderate” amount of alcohol coming from the driver’s breath, according to the report. When asked for identification, Urbanski handed her wallet to the officer and said, “You find it. I can’t seem to see it,” the report stated. She was asked to perform field sobriety tests—she declined to take a breath test—and then was arrested, the report continued.

Urbanski is due in Bridgeview court June 19.

NEW LENOX

April 28: Michael Gibson, 24, of the 3300 block of Navajo Drive in New Lenox, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, making an improper turn and driving without insurance, according to a report. An officer saw a car make an improper turn at about 1:25 a.m., near the intersection of Apache and Pueblo drives, the report stated. Gibson was arrested and taken to the Will County jail.

April 28: Tommie Brown, 34, of the 7300 block of South Kingston Avenue in Chicago, was charged with driving under the influence, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and driving with a suspended license, according to a report. Police reported seeing a vehicle fail to stop for an emergency vehicle at around 1:51 a.m., near the intersection of Route 30 and Washington Street. Brown was arrested and taken to the Will County jail.

April 28: Amy Spee, 30, of the 24300 block of Illini Court in Manhattan, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without lights when required and disobeying a traffic control device, according to a report. Police performed a traffic stop after seeing a car driving without its lights on at about 3:22 a.m., near the intersection of Gougar Road and Ferro Driver. Spee was released after posting bond.

April 27: Carlos Juarez, 27, of the 800 block of Cypress Lane in Joliet, was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, improper lane use and driving without insurance, according to a report. An officer was called to the McDonald's on Route 30 to investigate a crash where a driver fled the scene, the report stated. Police caught up with the driver along Route 30 near Interstate 80, and Juarez was arrested and taken to the Will County jail, the report stated.

ORLAND PARK

April 1: Cesario A. Solorsano, 44, of the 16400 block of Deer Run Drive in Lockport, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08, driving without insurance and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to a report.

Police were called at about 10:25 p.m. to the intersection of 179th Street and Wolf Road for a crash. Officers reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol coming from one of the drivers in the crash. Solorsano told police he took a bus to the White Sox game and was dropped off at the Metra station in Tinley Park. He was arrested after performing field sobriety tests, and while in police custody, he took a breath test, the report stated. Solorsano is due in court Mary 15 at the Bridgeview courthouse.

HOMEWOOD

April 28: Rontel Pullum, 38, of the 12800 block of Elizabeth Street in Calumet Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08, driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance, according to a report.

Police stopped Pullum at about 7:54 p.m., when he was seen speeding through the intersection of Bruce Lane and Arquilla Drive, the report stated. Pullum allegedly told police he had a "few" drinks, and an officer also noticed a crushed beer can in the cup holder, the report stated. He is due in court June 17 at the Markham courthouse.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS

April 25: Wallace Bennett, 62, of the first block of McCarthy Road in Park Forest, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08 and disobeying a stop sign, according to a report. An officer reported seeing Bennett's car fail to stop at a red light at about 12:46 a.m., near 1600 Chicago Road. Police also reported smelling an odor of alcohol on Bennett's breath. Bennett performed field sobriety tests, after which he was arrested, the report stated. While in custody at the police department, Bennett took a breath test, the report continued.

April 23: Tyrone J. Rogers, Jr., 25, of the 15300 block of Ellis Avenue in South Holland, was charged with driving under the influence, DUI with a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.08, illegal transportation of liquor and speeding, according to a report. Rogers was stopped for speeding around 1:21 a.m., in the 400 block of West 14th Street. He performed field sobriety tests and a breath test, after which he was arrested and taken to the Chicago Heights police department, the report stated. Rogers is due in court May 29 at the Markham courthouse.

FRANKFORT

April 27: Kristen D. Trice, 23, of the 11500 block of Tea Tree Lane Frankfort, was charged with driving under the influence, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08, failing to display license and improper lane use, according to a report. She was stopped near the intersection of Rote 30 and Plank Trail Drive. Trice is due in court June 7 at the Will County courthouse in Joliet.

April 27: Brooke N. Daverin, 27, of the 100 block of Prairie Avenue in Bradley, was charged with driving under the influence and speeding, according to a report. She was stopped in the 400 block of Nebraska Street. Daverin is due in court June 4 at the Will County courthouse in Joliet.

April 27: David A. Lazarz, 37, of the 20800 block of Frankfort Square Road in Frankfort, was charged with driving under the influence, driving without insurance, driving with a suspended license, improper lane use and parking illegally, according to a report. He was stopped near the intersection of Route 30 and Woodridge Drive. Lazarz is due in court June 6 at Will County courthouse in Joliet.

PALOS HEIGHTS

April 28: James W. Miller, 54, of the 9100 block of South Moody Avenue in Oak Lawn, was charged with driving under the influence, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08, driving without insurance and driving without a rear registration plate light, according to a report.

Miller's car was stopped at about 3:40 a.m., near the intersection of Edgewood Road and 70th Avenue, for an equipment violation. An investigation determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and could not provide proof of insurance, the report stated. Miller also submitted to a breath test, the report continued. He is due in court June 17 at the Bridgeview courthouse.

April 28: Andrzej Kulesza, 52, of the 9000 block of Sheri Lane, Orland Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane use, speeding and driving without insurance, according to a report. He was stopped at about 9:11 p.m. near 12900 S. Harlem Avenue for a moving violation. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. Kulesza is due on May 17 in Bridgeview court.

MOKENA

April 20: Robert R. Schumacher, 35, of the 6300 block of Kimberly Drive in Tinley Park, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08 and improper lane use, according to a report.

Police stopped Schumacher at about 9:54 p.m., in the 19800 block of South LaGrange Road, after seeing his SUV accelerate rapidly and weave in its lane, according to the report. Schumacher told police he had four craft beers at a local bar. He performed field sobriety tests, after which he was arrested, the report stated.

During the arrest, Schumacher asked if he could call his “state trooper buddy” but was denied, according to the report. Police said he continued to be belligerent and told officers that “cops are ‘D’ students." Schumacher also took a breath test after initially refusing, the report stated.

He is due in court May 2 at the Will County courthouse in Joliet.
