Police Net More than 90 Citations Over Christmas and New Year's Holidays

Tickets for speeding and driving without seat belts top the list, with a few tickets issued for driving on revoked licenses and child seat violations.

Over the Christmas and New Year's stretch, issued 94 tickets for speeding and failure to wear seat belts, tacking on one arrest for cannabis possession and one for DUI.

The majority of the citations handed out Dec. 17 through Jan. 2 were issued between midnight and 3 a.m.—the period of time most fatalities occur, according to program moderator Lt. Michael Shaughnessy. 

"“We cannot stress enough how important it is to drive sober or designate a sober driver before your celebrations begin, and always wear your seat belt," Shaughnessy said in a press release.

The increased traffic enforcement is part of IDOT's Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program.

Other citations included driving on revoked licenses or violation of child seat regulations.

The Christmas–New Year span was the second in a six-part program designed to promote traffic safety through saturated patrols in pre-assigned areas. The STEP program has shorter spurts between campaigns, according to a release from the city of Oak Forest.

The next leg of the campaign is set for March 11 through March 20, which includes St. Patrick's Day and the Oak Forest Fleadh.
